Finally an easy solution to bryopsis!

I guess my question is, how much do I dose in ml and at what rate. ?
Use the chemistry calculator to determine how much to add. chemically up to 100 ppm per day will be OK but to prevent any potential biological stress I would recommend to do 50 ppm per day or less.
By the way, you will need a bit more than 3,000 milliliters so I hope you got one gallon of the stuff.

aquaconnect,

be careful with Mg if you have LPS. I lost a huge torch coral that had been doing great for almost 3 years. All the other corals in my tank, mainly SPS, were not affected negatively.

I raised my Mg level 50 ppm per day. In retrospect, I think I went too fast.

I suggest you go slow especially as you approach the higher Mg levels and watch your LPS very closely.

jdieck,
if i did everything correct using your calculator, just to raise it from 1300 to 1350 on 175gal actual water capacity (which would be 50ppm for the entire tank, right), i would add 473ml of tech m, correct? that's a lot, i've never added that much of anything at once to my tank. i'll wait for a response before i do this for sure, just don't want to kill anything!

btw, aquarium water volume on there is actual water volume correct. not 180gal tank + 58 gal sump filled 9", right? just double checking because it seems like so much to add and i want to dose it properly. thanks again!

Be careful! I have been using tech-M for a while now to maintain mag and in my tank 1ml per gallon will raise the mag somewhere around 80ppm. Total volume 220g.

Before jumping in I would test, then add 1ml per gallon then re-test.

Make sure to shake the bottle real good before every use, it settles quickly.

That does seem Like a lot!!

I would start with 100 ml and then measure the Mg level after a couple of hours to make sure.
Also, make sure you have enough aged saltwater to do a large water change in case something reacts negatively.

Check the instructions in the jug, if it say that 1 ml will increase the magnesium 18.4 ppm in one gal of aquarium water then that amount is right. If it say that 1 ml increase the magnesium by 39.1 ppm in one gal of aquarium water then divide that amount in half.
The issue with all magnesium supplements dry or liquid, chloride or sulfate based is that the chloride and sulfate contains a lot of water, one has six molecules of water of magnesium sulfate and the other has seven molecules of water for each molecule of magnesium chloride so there is a lot to be added to increase the effective magnesium ion.

Right it is actual water volume, if you want to verify the actual volume this other calculator might help:

I have seen Tech-M Jugs with two different legends for concentration, some say 1 ml will increase magnesium by 18.4 ppm in one gal of water and other used to say 39.1 ppm instead, I verified with them some time back and they confirmed that the 18.4 was the figure.

Now having said that I always recommend to add half of the amount or no more than 100 ppm at once, and then test. This has two purposes, first it will insure that if there is a defect in the formulation and the concentration is higher the damage will be minimized or avoided. Second, although most if not all commercial products I have seen have a very reasonable quality control, it is very difficult to really asses what are the impurities that come with every product, by limiting the one time batch amounts of supplements you add you will give some time to your system to process and adjust to those impurities.

Exactly…This is why I recommend dosing once in the morning and once in the evening. You can still half the total dosage for the day if desired.

Mine is the 18.4 model. I added 90ml's last night, and another 90 this morning, so I'll test tonight to see where it's at. Thanks.

Well. im doing the MG again, first time seemed to work to a point, but it came back when levels dropped so i ramped it back up, im currently at 1800 with MG and this stuff is laughing at me again.. ITs been at this level for about 1 week, still hoping that it will work he 2nd time, i rearranged rock work in tank siphoned all sand and made tank almost squeaky clean and still the bryopsis that was hanging out somehere came back. Does anyone get long time results from this evil? or is it a constant battle with keeping levels high?

I measured my mg again tonight after adding a bunch, and it's testing at 1125! What the heck is going on? It looks like it's blowning up in my tank. I tested my di water, and it's at 001ppm which I think is excellent. I'll dose some more tonight and tomorrow and see what it says. What's the best mg test out there? I thought seachem was pretty good, but maybe there's something better. Till tomorrow!

For some reason, Mg isn't something you can test the same day as the day you dose, ime. Give it a few days and test then.

I don't know what the best test kit is, but I use Salifert. Every once in a while I will double check my results with a Tropic Marin test kit, both usually read real close to the same.

I just ordered a salifert to compare to my seachem, and it was almost impossible to find anyone who had any instock. Also, I ordered some more tech m because I'm sure I don't have enough. Thanks again for the help!
