finally beginning my 480g 5'x5'x30" SPS Reef Tank

Hi guys, sorry to jump in here, but are there any links documenting a wavebox using a 6201 or 6301? I'd love to see some of that.

here is the video clip. My tank is 84''L

would love to try a giant wave box but I think for my tank it would be serious overkill. I already have a 6301 waiting for the tank so I can see what "damage" it can do in a cube, looking forward to unleashing that beast. Thinking I might put it on a wavy sea in the middle of the tank and let it loose.

jon - visual pollution has been a great concern of mine and that is why I am even thinking about an internal overflow box. At least I could hide almost all equipment in there. Alternatively I could replace 1 panel and get an external overflow built right but I don't really want to pay the extra money to throw away a 1" 60"x30" starphire panel.

How did this suddenly turn into a thread about member's balls. Now my thread is going to split just due to another 15 pages of references to how small each others balls are.... :D.. which we all know are incredible tiny due to the hours each day you all spend with a laptop on your sacks.

Sorry Tom about the meat ball part...But I like your design of hiding all of the equipment into that one compartment. I saw you mention about a CL on the bottom. I have the CL on the bottom and if I have to do it again I will skip it. More holes in the tank will have more chance to leak. Plus the plumbing nightmare and plumbing parts are not cheap. If you can come up with some type of compartment to hide the tunze pump for flow on the bottom then I think it will be much better than the CL

That would be wicked but might peel the flesh off your corals!

One other thought is to install a false wall. Trying to think back I cannot remember if you were planning on a complete walk-around tank or if you would have at least one wall to work with.

no worries man... just messing with you all... trust me, in my group of friends the conversation is usually not more academic then this either, and thank god for that.

I have always wanted to run a closed loop on an 8 way... just seems like a great way to hide water movement and get some good flow but I am also scared of having all that water drain into my living room, that would not be a good day. Not so worried about the cost as I have everything already but I have considered replacing the bottom panel as well, as that would be the cheapest panel to replace, but not wanting to shell out any more dough is the real issue. Now between you and jnarowe I'm getting all paranoid about having a CL. Damn all these choices we have today.

A false wall is another idea. I wanted the tank to be viewable from 4 sides as I only have a wall touching it on one side and only for 8 inches of that side. You can see it in that last group Sketchup pics. If I had an entire side to play with the design would have been different from the beginning and probably would have been the smarter option. Basically if I redid this entire thing I probably would have a completely different tank right now. But I'm very happy I have the depth and scale to play with.

hey Tom invincible569 loose some sleep when one of the bulkhead start leaking plus you never know how long is the plastic gasket will last. I regret that I drill the bottom of the tank since I know in time I will have a problem just don't know when. The way we run our reef tank now is super saturate with ALK and Cal which mean plastic will get brittle sooner than normal use and the darn gasket of the bulkhead is made of plastic.....:-(

damn damn damn... why didn't someone warn me about all these little annoying details while I was blindly designing my tank. Damn experience and knowledge.

and yet I still can't wait to get this thing rolling and deal with all the little problems that come along... without all the little worries, what fun would this hobby be. Then it would be as boring as a FW tank, and no one wants that :D

guess you can't get better peace of mind then that.... until one of those moded wave boxes blows the front panel off your tank as if it were in a cartoon. Clear across the room the first time you fire it up. That would be AWESOME

so Roger is telling me that the wave box will not work well diagonally in my tank and would basically be a wasted effort... any ideas or inputs? Agree? disagree?

I agree. If you in fact want waves. If you don't want waves, then i still think it's a very efficient way to get great flow.

don't care so much about waves... I care about "de-sedimentation".. Love how tunze advertising sticks in my head.. anyway as long as I can get the positive effects of the wave box I could care less about the wave, just means less people will get sea sick looking at it.

I disagree with Roger statement, he told me the same thing with my 4x4 cube but when i add my dual waveboxes. I achieved 2" of wave. Im sure you are able to achieve the same result. Are you planning on having the wavebox side by side on each corner or facing each other? If you place it side by side, im sure it will work well.

I'm planning on putting them side by side. Could you let me know how you had your 4x4 set up with the wave boxes? Thanks man.. appreciate your input.
