finally got around to covering powerhead, buuut ....

So I used a small sponge, squished it up, and then stuffed it into the intake of my maxijet1200, and then stuck that basket-like cover over it. My flow has decreased *dramatically*, and there are lots of microbubbles now ... something tells me I did not do this correctly lol. Please tell me the correct way

Get a sponge that fits around the outside of the "basket-like cover." Definitely not a good idea to clog the intake as you describe.

Garygb is correct, you do not want to place foam/ sponge inside the powerhead. You can order the external sponges from any online retailer or you might find one at a LFS. You can just slide it over the intake tube portion or you can use a plastic zip-tie to secure it. Best of luck.

I don't think I have time to list all the "dumb" things I've done in this hobby, so I wouldn't sweat it. The important thing is that you asked and got it figured out, and that you were being proactive by trying to cover the intakes and do the right thing.

Because I am lazy. But manly because there isn't an easy way to do it.

However I did make a cover for my Seio in for my other tank,
(( don't mind all the algae, the picture was taken before I redid the tank)) I cut up a sponge that comes with the oceanic tanks.

Plus, I no longer have the BTA in my 75, so I am not worried about the seio and the koralia. In all the years I've had haddonii anemones never once have they floated around.

This is an older thread, but I was wondering how often you guys clean the sponges.

Weekly with each water change. Sometimes sooner if I feel like it.

sounds good, how did you acclimate your anemones?

For me, I float the bag for about 20 minutes or so to temp acclimate ( longer if the package came in a little cold )

After that I open up the bag and pour the contents into a 5 gallon bucket. Then start a drip line. After about 45 minutes I take the anemone out of the bucket and place it in the tank. ( powerheads off until it settles in somewhat, sometimes over night ).

There was a time that an anemone came in in really poor shape, could barely see through the bag the water was so cloudy. In that case I just temp acclimated. The water in the bag was fairly foul, so wanted to get the anemone into clean water as soon as I could.
