Finally got my tank quiet!

Modded my QO4000 return today with some long suction cups from a Rio pump and FINALLY got rid og the hum I could hear across the house!

Now I have a question, the loudest thing on the tank is now the fans on the halides, and the splashing in the sump

I saw the sump muffler thing, tried it, only thing I ended up doing was washing the floor with some salt water heh.

Any suggestions to quiet the sump?

Swap the fans with some quiet computer fans, assuming they are 12volt DC. Just googling the part number on the current fan in the fixture should result with performance info on it that you can match. Silent PC review tested a bunch of fan. Can you do a beananimal or herbie type-siphon overflow?

Fan in the fixture is 110v, it isn't too terribly loud though. Coralife aqualight pro 48"

Have a Durso now, the overflow itself isn't noisy enough to notice unless youre right next to the tank, it's the splashing of water in the sump from the return that is loud.

That said, my stand is completely open for the moment, as I'm not going to skin it until I get the new sump built and installed heh.

Extend the line to about an inch or two below the water. is your fixture in a canopy or open top? if it is in a canopy then you could always install a few nicer fans on the canopy and disable the fans in the fixture.

is it hard PVC or spa flex type hosing? if it is hard PVC you can add a T, one side goes down under the water and the second goes up a bit and has a cap with a hole similiar to the top of the durso. That way air can vent up and out instead of bubbling out of the bottom of the drain. My new tank I used Spa flex but I am having this same problem so I am trying to figure another way to do this or I will end up just hard plumbing everything.

I'm using spa flex as well.

This is what I tried building yesterday (sound it labeled as sump muffler)

All it successfully did was make me mop my floor of salt water haha.

Perhaps it's the size of PVC I was forced to use per the design of the sump (3/4)

I will have to try again with 1 1/2" once I get the new sump built

if the pipe is to small to handle the flow and the up part isnt tall enough then yes the water will back up and flow out of the top. But everything should be in or over your sump, how did you flood the floor?

Sump is a converted wet dry. Bulkhead for the drain comes through a acrylic top

Can you speak more of quieting the return pump? My tank is in the kids' room (next to mine), and while they seem to be fine with the hum, it drives me crazy.

I have a Sicce Synchra 3.0, with rubber suction cups, but the hum of the pump still transfers to the walls of the sump, which then amplify the sound. I've tried putting the pump on filter floss, foam, mouse pad, and it didn't work.

As for the sump, I avoid splashing by having the overflow plumbed below the waterline. Is the answer that simple?

I suspended my sicce 3.0 in the middle of the water using string. Even then, the vibration transferred into the tubing.

Look up Noctua fans. They cost a few more shekels, but worth every penny for their incredible lack of noise.
