Finally got the camera working...this...

is my tank boss. She tolerates the blues amiably now, but it was several days persuading her. She's the gold version of the domino damsel, a dascyllus type with much the disposition and manner of a maroon clown. They will also inhabit an anemone...a magnifica. But she's quite happy with her cave, which she keeps swept down to rock with that tail of hers. Ms Domino is 4.5" nose to tail. And pretty beefy. Picking her up in a net would be real exciting.

I wish I could capture how the light shines through her gold fins. She's really quite pretty in strong light. She's also called a humbug damsel, because when she's ticked, she buzzes very loudly, probably very disconcerting for something in the water right in front of her. You can hear it in the next room. The littlest of the blues is about the length of her side fin, but feeds beside her without a problem---once we got Ms. Domino to understand she was not lunch. I can't get her to pose---every time she sees the eye of the camera, she turns nose-toward it. You have to sneak it up and shoot fast, and the lag on this little camera is fierce. ;)

They're challenging, when it comes to introducing a new fish to the community, but given enough room to maintain territory, they're amazingly forgiving of other damsels, don't bother corals (there's one exception) and ignore many other species of fish (except chromis, which they hate) as if they didn't even see them. They WILL defend their territory, but most of it's posturing and nobody gets bit. The key is tank size. This is a 100 gallon tank, minimum for a peaceful damsel community.

The two little guys to the right, incidentally, one barely visible, are Fiji blues, a fairly even-tempered species, Chrysiptera, I think: males tend to have a bit of orange on their underside, but these are quite young as yet; and the very little guy to the left is a yellowtail. I didn't notice at first that the yellowtail's blue is deeper and truer, less aqua than the Fiji blues, but they make a nice little variation as a set. This camera is old, and doesn't have very good color accuracy, among its other problems. But it talks to the computer nicely. ;)
