Finally! In Tank AEFW Treatment Success

Amazing find. Can't wait to see more tanks test this treatment. I wonder if a lower concentration would still be as effective and less stressful for the corals and snails.

Potassium dipping corals may be the new thing too!

The treatment was performed last Thursday (8 days ago) and was amazing. I added 1lb of pure potassium chloride per gallon of tank water. We mixed the KCL solution (water softner product from Lowes) with RO water.

This is a typo, right? This would increase your salinity 5 times higher* than normal!

*ballpark

Treatment tank was 300 gallons. To mix in tank solution --- 1 lb KCL for every 50 gallons tank volume (for the mixture I used 5 gallon buckets and added up to about 7 lb KCL). This will make it easier to just pour one 5 gallon bucket solution and wait 30 minutes to change water..

Ah, nvm. I didn't see this update.

pretty wild, and very encouraging. I'd pay a fortune for a natural predator but in the absence of that, this would do.

Thank goodness in my current tank there are no signs of the beasts!

Have you confirmed that this killed the eggs? I'm currently battling some mean nudibranchs on my SPS (weird, not on montis), and I was thinking about basically just dipping all of the frags in a high potassium solution. Nudibranchs are similar to AEFW in that it doesn't seem that anything kills the eggs (luckily they're easier to remove).

OK

That doesnt sound to bad, one pound per gallon was a little scary, I have a 450 plus system

I only have 3 fish but I wanna get those out my purple tang has been with me for 14 almost 15 years , through 3 tank moves and 2 different tanks I would hate to loose him.

Thanks for the great info

That was a typo. I was trying to say that for each pound of KCL we actually mixed it with 1 gallon of RO water for the treatment solution. So we actually mixed 6lb KCL with 6 gallons of RO and mixed until dissolved. We then added the entire 6 gallon solution directly to the 300 gallon tank. So only 6lb total went in for each treatment.

No confirmation that it killed the eggs. We were watching eggs for days that had already been hatched which was later confirmed by Kate Rowlison. That is the reason we went ahead and did the 3 total treatments allowing us to kill any hatchings that may have occured.

Day 50 update:

3 total treatments were performed every 2 weeks
We returned the fish and small cleanup crew into tank and all are doing exceptionally well and eating anything they are fed. They are all already attacking the algae outbreak and have put a considerable dent in it already. All SPS, chalices, zoas, palys, LPS are doing well and regaining colors quickly. Amazing thing about the entire process is some of the SPS actually kept growing during this time and have nice new white tips.
All is well at this point and no signs of bacteria kill off of mass proportions that I was worried about.

so if i where to dip in this solution i would need to use less than the recommended due to sea water already has K in it ?

thank you, so if i understand correctly this would be a "fresh water KCL Dip"?

I have had another senior moment!!!! Sorry bout that..
Dip: one teaspoon KCL to 1/2 gallon tank salt water - dip 30 minutes

Treatment Solution: 1 lb KCL for every 50 gallons tank volume
to mix solution: 1 lb KCL to 1 gallon RO, stir until dissolved and add to tank, let sit 30 minutes, and then commence with water changes to achieve at least 100%

thanks for the info.

can any other brand be used as long as its pure KCL?

im also interested in this method but only for future diping methods?

Sure it could! Just make sure you are getting the purest KCL and I would suggest finding powder form if you can to make mixing much easier. KCL is widely available so many brands will be out there.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting your details. Hopefully in a few weeks you're still AEFW free.

All still going well. Corals are regaining colors and growing nicely. The algae outbreak control crew arrived and is now mowing down the algae and after 2 days a noticeable difference. All fish eating foods and picking tank all day. Report back next week or before if necessary.

This is really incredible. Finally, after all these years, a hobbyist has invented a way to kill off the most dreaded pest we've encountered yet without ripping your tank apart. Great job and thank you for thinking outside the box and being brave enough to try it!

What made you think that raising the K would be a way to kill them off? I mean, it makes total sense in hindsight. I wish I would have thought of it!

The only downside to this method is that you have to be able to catch all your fish. That can be quite difficult for some, especially in a large tank with large colonies, but as you pointed out, it may be possible to let the solution stun them so you can catch them and then transfer them to a hospital tank to recover. It would probably be wise to save a couple of small pieces of LR rubble so that you can use them to repopulate your bacterial populations as well as your pods and other critters.
