Finally! Thallasia sprouted!

I've been watching my single Thallasia plant for some kind of growth for a while now - it only seems to keep up by producing a new leaf for each leaf that dies off. I received this Turtlegrass plant on March 26th 2003 w/ two leaves and it maintains 3-5 with the maximum length I've seen as about 9". Here's the photo of it after the dust settled from it's planting.

A little while back I noticed an odd translucent rock/shell on the DSB, by the next day, the upper tip had begun to show signs of green!.... It's a couple inches away from the parent Thallasia plant, so I'm hopeful that there are more under the sand that'll be coming out soon - I've really been wanting more, but have had a hard time getting ahold of any. Here's the photo journal of it's growth to date.

So far.... So good...

Unfortunatly, my Shoal grass in this tank/DSB isn't doing as well. It hasn't filled in, as it did before, after the last harvesting I did to populate my primary display. Conversely, the Primary display has a very nice patch of Shoal grass that's quadrupled in density since it's planting a couple of months ago.

Just wanted to share since it's been such a long time coming for this single Thallasia to make some company for itself... :D

Thanks,
John.

Excellent, I planted a single Thallsia rhizome around the same time and its behaved basically the same by sending up a new leaf as an older one would die, maintaining about 5 leaves all the time. I was just counting a couple days ago and now its up to 7 leaves. I also just planted alot more Thallasia aroud it. No new sprouts, but everything is growing.

Very interesting.. so it took three and a half years (!) to get a new shoot? Sheessssssshhhhh! ;)

Sorry to hear about the waning shoal grass in the secondary tank. Interesting conundrum. Have you tried to replant from the display to see if you can get it established again?

Yes, This year.... sorry. Sarah, that Turtle grass sprig is actually the one you sent me in the spring.

My turtlegrass has put out three new plants in the last month. It took 5 months for it to start this so at least I know the rhizomes are growing.

I can't wait till the day when we can all have thick beds of turtlegrass in out tanks. We still have a lot to learn but it is a start.

Agreed... that would be great. For the time being - I'd be happy with around 5-7 Thallasia plants, a healthy bed of Shoal (I think it's my lights 'going bad' that's caused the decrease in growth) and being able to keep up with my Nitrate additions enough to have Caulerpa survive for more than a month! *sigh*.... I get great growth and then it bottoms out - all the while I'm dosing my heart out... but that's for another thread.

The Thallasia sprout has it's second leaf starting already - hopefully this will continue and maybe I'll even end up with some more sprouts from this parent plant.

Thanks,
John.
