Finding LFSs that have quarantined fish?

Hi everyone,
Am new to the hobby, and just was wondering if most people just buy fish at their local fish store and quarantine, or if you call the fish stores to find out which ones sell quarantined fish? Thanks. . .

None of the big online supplies do. Some local store may but you would have to ask others around where you live.

Almost 0 chance of any LFS QTing it's fish...

Plus I would not trust it. Everything aside parasites like ich can move between tanks trough aerosolized water droplets with the pathogen inside. In a store that sells fish with many tanks and many fish, it would be nearly impossible to not cross-contaminate tanks with pathogens.

The sheer cost of QTing every fish the LFS in gets would put them out of buisness. Now you may find a smaller specialty LFS that does QT, but they will not have the volume some of the larger stores have.

I know one of the more popular LFS's I go to sells close to 50 fish a week. I also go to a "specialty" shop that sells probably 1 or 2 fish a week. They like us are hobbyist and sells out of his house. They do QT everything because it goes into his 500G tank. If someone comes in and sees something they like, he "fishes" it out and bags it up.

FWIW the "specialty" shop also costs 5x the price as a regular LFS. Sometimes it's worth the extra price to get quality livestock.

you might win the lottery before finding that store.

What all of them have said. The ONLY way to be sure you have a properly quarantined fish is to do it yourself.

Although there are a few shortcuts in this hobby, this is not one of them.

Good luck finding an LFS that quarantines. They just cannot afford to have fish sitting for weeks at a time with the overhead. You would be lucky to find one that at least has treated their water with stuff to fight infection. Even then the fish may only have been in the water for 24 hours.

I had planned on doing something out of my house more to keep my tanks stocked and at the same time helping out others in the hobby and my local forum banned my account. I stopped bringing in stuff because of it. Crazy part is I see others that make it SEEM like they are selling frags, but they are just getting shipments and fragging them. No ban on them which makes me think that getting banned is more of a subjective thing.

If you can find someone local that is selling out of their house, definitely trust that person a little more than an LFS until you cannot anymore. Still QT yourself or not, just up to you at that point.

I have a 60g FT that I do sell some frags from so I know what is (and isn't/can't possibly be) there and I would still suggest that anybody QT anything they get from me justincase.

What you do, and what can then happen to your tank is entirely up to you.

There used to be a small store in Lodi California that would QT their fish. (about 10 miles away from me) You had your display tanks up front with fish for sale, but the back had numerous 50 gallon tanks that were used for QT. I was lucky enough to get the tour one time and the lady really knew her stuff. (big book advocate) The only downside was the price. A Yellow Tang would probably go for almost double what it was at a different store.

Thanks for the replies, I thought that might be the case. .but was remaining optimistic. Have been reading up on how to quarantine and since I'm brand new to the hobby, it seems a little daunting. Have been reading threads on placing fish on quarantine, but what do you all of you do that quarantine yourselves in regards to giving them medication as a form of prevention? Do you just dose regardless if you're not sure if they have something? Have been reading some people give prazipro, others give formalin. . .

From what I've heard from aquatics store owners, is not worth it the time to QT the fish, since they come and go so quickly.

Also, a lot of the store nearby my house simply run a therapeutic level of copper in their tanks, as well separating the inverts from the fish.

I still suggest that you QT yourself. Just get a 10g at Petco and make sure you QT up to 2 fish at a time MAXIMUM. :)

Forgot something... IF the aquatic store tells you that they QT, suspect. It's very unlikely they really do, if they do it, they must be charging more... Keep an eye on it... Good luck!

Thanks. .wonder what the therapeutic level of copper would be? Also, if my display tank is an 8 gallon, what would be an appropriate size for a quarantine?

I agree with everyone.... don't trust any LFS or online (no matter how good) to QT fish. I have some excellent LFS around me...nice stores, knowledgeable staff and owners, healthy livestock, but non QT anything. It is always best to QT yourself for sure! [emoji16]

Thanks, I thought so. It's not for another two months, but was wondering what medications everyone recommends keeping on hand. I've been reading the threads about quarantine, and was just wondering what people do in regards to medication. . Does anyone give their fish medication as a preventative measure or only as needed?

Only med I give regardless of condition is prazipro for internal worms and/or flukes. Of course I TTM for ich regardless also, typically giving prazi on the second and fourth transfer.

I have switched from ordering fish from my LFS to Liveaquaria or divers den. Never had a problem in multiple orders, and if I believe what I read on their site they do an extensive QT process. But you pay for that at Divers Den (part of Live Aquaria). None of my LFS QT, outside of a "freshwater dip"...

I know it is still a risk, but for me I would rather pay more than set up a QT and go through that hassle. I am not advocating no QT, just realistic on what I am willing to do. Maybe that will change as I transition to a larger tank and have more time/effort/money/responsibility invested in my additional fish population.
