My brother has a nano tank and his carpet surfed as well. I only have one in my 160G tank for about 6 months and it seems to do OK. There are plenty of room to hide obviously, and releasing him before dark gave him plenty of time to explore the tank before encountering his tank mates (2 tangs, 3 clowns, 2 yellow tail damsels and couple of green chromis.)

Back to the original question, firefish do not thrive with large or boisterous tank mates. I suggest you stop putting them into your tank, please.

Heres some interesting anecdotes:

I've tried purple firefish 4 separate times, and they ALL perished quickly in the QT. They don't feed and just hide. I've kept them alone and sometimes with another fish and it's only the purple firefish that didn't make it. The QT tanks ranged from 10 to 29 gallon.

The only semi-successful time i've kept a purple firefish was when I basically cupramined my DT and turned it into a 150 gallon QT tank (removed everything but PVC pipes) and the firefish actually did alright with larger angelfish, triggerfish, butterfly and foxface, (4-5") but I must have crushed him when I was trying to move the PVC pipe and he didnt' make it.

No luck with this species for myself either, as I'm on a quest to find some decent small fish 2-3" that are bold enough to thrive in a community tank.

additional pics to follow.

Is that a trigger in the underground sump?

What happened to the angelfish?

I have a purple firefish and he's out all the time but only has peaceful tankmates. They are really skittish and will not eat if the tankmates are too rough.

My last pair of firefish I had for many years. They are great fish. I have a purple now, for the last year or so. They are hardy but easily intimidated, especially when new to a tank.

Threads like this one sometimes makes me question the hobby. Do we not read about the fish that we are responsible for providing a suitable environment?

I totally agree and am tired of answering uninformed questions from hobbyists such as the OP who simply do not care about the fish they have opted to care for.

I would be worried about all the chemicals (( the first picture of the second group )) so close to the open bit "sump".

BTW -- It doesn't matter how much of the water you transferred from the old tank, the bacteria doesn't live in the water.

now for my other livestock that is being questioned by beandawg, they are all in my pond. now do you get it now???

Oh, "I do now get it now". I understand exactly what is happening here. What I don't understand is *WHY*. What is the point of a tiny cement "pond"? Doesn't it raise your pH? Is that why you have what looks like driftwood in there? To help knock it back down? Why not just have a normal sump instead? By the way, a little surface agitation will help you out with that oil slick you have going on in your DT. Not sure if you have a skimmer or not, but that would also help.

+2 to this. As to the OP, the setup you have presented is one where you will likely never have success with any sort of firefish. Do a bit of research and see what sort of habitat they usually reside in. Your set up and your current stocking make success a near impossibility with any sort of timid/fragile fish. Also I'm sure you don't care, but please, please stop buying new firefish to add. It should be abundantly clear they are not a suitable choice for your set up.

Again if you're really reading what i mentioned i have A SUMP, DT and POND that are all connected together. AGAIN I HAVE A SUMP AND A SKIMMER.

dino, yes that's a niger trigger you're seeing in the pics. there is also a orangeline trigger at the bottom of the driftwood who is very fat and cowardly. the other fish in there are just damsels. i traded my angelfish long ago.

nature nerd, if you read the thread i said ive done my research before adding the firefish goby. the care level is easy and the habitat suitable for them with lots of caves and overhangs etc. etc. however firefish keeps dying even though the tankmates i placed before was just clownfish and tang WITHOUT THE DAMSELS AND DOTTYBACK. i just placed the damsels and dottyback last thurs when i upgraded my tank to 85gal since i cant take care a firefish. i know damsels and dottyback are aggressive thats why i added them last when the firefish was dead already.

i dont just ask questions here, before i do ask questions i make sure ive done everything i can before asking. im not a lazy hobbyist like others who just post and post without reviewing articles.

todd, what chemicals are you pertaining to?

the reason why i joined RC because i was told reefers here are helpful and kind. now for the people and experts here who is tired of answering, helping, sharing all your experiences then don't and just do me a favor and keep you insults and criticism to yourselves. when i do ask for help here and post something, im addressing the people here in RC who are willing to help. you don't have to say or post anything if your not happy to do so. nobody is forcing you to post here if you're tired of helping others. i guess you would rather the other hobbyist to make the mistake a million times rather than asking here in RC because we might get the same insults and judgement by you guys.
***Note: im NOT saying this to everyone, only to the people who belongs to this group. i only have 55posts since i joined meaning i don't fire and fire away here. i always do my research first and if it is still not clear that's the time i ask for help.

just want to say to thank you for the kind people out here who helps hobbyist like us without asking for anything in return. thank you again.

+1 I have been reading this and I am disgusted with the responce from some of these fellow reefers. I guess everything they have ever done has been perfect! get over yourselves. the guy simply asked a question. there are thousands of RC members, if you dont want to answer a question move on to the next post. I know there is alot of posts and few Admins but I cant beleave that RC lets this type of highschool bulling go on.

Now back to the question: I think you may be a little overstocked in that tank, and yes clown tangs can be a little on the mean side, and firefish are easily intimedated, that is probably why you are loosing them. I also agree with some of the guys when they are saying I wouldnt try anymore firefish in this setup, but I am not go to be an A@# when I tell you that. Happy Reefing!
