firereef 180 gallon build

theres a few different types available, ive seen a few threads on them, i have the tunze osmolator myself, its considered expensive and so most guys on here use alternative models

Ok... So I bought an R/O system and it seems to be working fine.( I think)? I was wondering how to determine if the R/O water was safe? How do I test the water before I pour it in my tank?

you need to buy a ro-di meter,a tds meter, theres 2 types, in-line and hand held, 20 bucks ish, go for the hand held, imo any water with a tds reading over 2 should be discarded, a meter will tell you this

if its sealed then a few weeks, i usually make mine up as soon as ive water changed, and usually i change every 7-14 days, ive had it stored for around 20 days before and not seen any problems

Ok im mad!!! I had a canister filter filled with live rock on my hex tank and the canister filter doesnt work anymore. I think its to late to build a sump for my hex so I was wondering if it was a bad idea to keep the fish in my 180gal tank? I think its been two days without a filter in my hex cuz I was at work on a 48 hr shift. I have all my fish in the sump of my 180 for now until I figure something out.

well how many is all, and what fish are they, we need to assess whether they are reef safe first and then whether the new tank can take the extra bio-load at this point as well.and what have you done with the rock that was in the canister, 3 questions, he he sorry about that

Total of 17 fish! The reason I had so many fish? I bought the 13 chromis from a guy who lost his house and was gonna sell them to someone else as feeders. I left the rock in the canister

wow, ive just picked myself up off the floor, well obviously your 180 will be better than the 33 where you kept these guys, but im worried your 180 will crash as you have added 17 fish directly to the water system of it, i would have said 1 or 2 a month to allow a little time for the bacteria to increase in numbers so it can deal with the extra ammonia, imo buddy id recommend you get your lfs to take the cromis and take a risk with the other 5

Yeah, get yourself a TDS meter. Click HERE Also, it doesn't look like you have a DI stage. Maybe I can't see it in the pic. If you don't you can easily add one. That will bring your water down to 0 TDS. That is what you are looking for, purity. ;) I usually purge the system with about a gallon before I use it. Might not be totally necessary, but that's what I do. :)

17 is a lot to add to a fresh system. Sadly, the bioballs might be a good way to at least get the waste processed very efficiently if you have to go that way, but I agree on see if the store will take / board the 13 chromis. They tend to squabble and less than ideal conditions probably won't help. The other 5 should be okay in a system of that size, but I might still be inclined to use the bioballs as a safety net for the short run.
