First attempt at HDR

I like the first version, Austin. The second shot (with the brighter foreground) looks unnatural. ie. it's not something you would see when shooting sunset. It's like the light is coming from above but the sun is setting on the horizon. You also don't need a polarizer for these kind of shots. On a w/a lens, it will produce an uneven shade on the sky which is a pain to fix. The softness issue is very likely due to you handholding the camera.

The most important thing is the light, and I think you shot too soon. The sun is still up and the sunset will be more intense had you waited about 5 more minutes. At that point, you will not have the blown out horizon and instead you will get an evenly-lit golden sky. This will only last a good 15-45 seconds at best but you have to train your eye to look for it and be ready.
