First Build - 55 gallon mixed reef

oh boy, well I have finished the trim on my stand, I did order my light, it it should be shipped this week, right now I am trying to figure out my plumping..I will take pictures of the stand a little later.. other than what I have already updated thats about it for now...

One good thing, my list is getting shorter!!! Or maybe its getting longer hummmmmmmm??

LOL yeah the above post is what happens, when you reply to posts before you have coffee!!! I thought this was my thread!!! :)

Looks like you are off to a great start! does pumpkin have a mate yet?

Thanks!

I have not :hmm2: unfortunately, pumpkin began showing symptoms similar to his original mate that passed, and I have had him in QT for a week now, his course of metro just finished up for internal worms which I figured was the culprit. He has definitely showed improvement and is eating at every feed.

He has been getting NLS Thera+A pellets, Prime Reef and Formula II flake, frozen brine/mysis with selcon.

Display tank is going to be fishless for 8 weeks, and pumpkin will stay in the QT for this length to make sure everything works out.

Any updates?

Not much to update yet, things have slowed down quite a bit, but I did make a purchase from ReefCleaners because my diatoms in the sand was getting out of control.

1 Florida Fighting Conch
5 Nassarius snails
5 Cerith snails (ordered 5, got about 100 dwarfs - trying to figure out what happened here)
5 assorted hermits (all 5 were thin striped)
5 Nerite snails
1 coral banded shrimp (needed to make miminum shipping )

These guys were all added on Friday around noon, everyone is happy and thriving, a few hermits have already picked up new homes from the nice assortment of shells I purchased.

BTW I am having a pineapple sponge attack like no other, some of these things are starting to reach edible pineapple proportions :eek1:

I was trying to figure out where you were going with that  but glad to hear you are making progess :bounce1:

Did some water changes this weekend for the QT (50%) and DT (33%) and and the levels are all good:

NH3 - 0ppm
NO2 - 0ppm
NO3 - 0ppm (did I get the scientific abbreviations correct this time ?)
Ph - 8.2
SG - 1.023 (before ATO SG peaks to 1.025)

AND!!

Ca - 425ppm

Gave the Red Sea test kit a trial run and man are those things way easier than the API rigs. Held of on measuring Mag and Alk for now, start following those more after I get a coral (few months away)

TANK SHOTS (the turbos have devoured basically all of the diatoms from the rocks, those things were dark brown a few days ago)

I bought this tank used, and I wish I had noticed all the scratches in the acrylic before I got started. Would have buffed those out with some Nuvos and a wet sand - oh well

Rounding the 2 month mark...

Rounding the 2 month mark...

A few more small updates to make:

Pumpkin is still doing good in QT after about three weeks, hoping to get a mate in there with him shortly so they can both be put in the DT at the same time, but not putting a rush on this.

I finally cut the intake PVC pipe for the Reef Ocotopus BH1000 so that the skimmer strainer was actually straining the surface of the tank water. No picture to show this though.

Finally finished hooking up the ATO system after getting the plumping I needed. You can see the 90* elbow meticulously zipped tied to the tank to the right of the skimmer intake:

The ATO res (AKA the homer bucket)... which now has a matching orange lid with a hole for the tubing to be run, and keep debris out.

The controller above it is for the hydor smartwave, which is not as smart as it sounds, wish I had went with a more advanced wavemaker... oh well, I will get those mp40's &60's with my upgrade ;)

This is the controller for the ATO :) , which is located on the otherside:

New Torch Coral

New Torch Coral

So I went to the LFS over the weekend to check out their corals again.. Well they still had this torch coral (1 of 3) which had been on display for over a month now, and is now mine :bounce3:

Here it is after giving it a dip in CoralRx and getting placed in its new home (not so happy):

And here it is a few hours later opening up!

That's it for now, just have to keep tracking Ca/Mg/Alk levels and make sure everything stays stable.

Very nice!!!! I am hoping to get some live stock this week, will be mostly CUC, it will be a while be for I have fish in my tank, I will be taking extra precautions to reduce ich population in the DT. by doing TT and QT so if I get anything it will still be about 3 months before fish are in.

Thanks!

And sounds like a good plan to me, Pumpkin is rounding the end of week three for QT so I plan for another 7 weeks of leaving the DT fallow in case there was any ich introduced, although I have not seen any symptoms or signs of it.

that sounds good!! you do know that the coral you added could have carried ich on it right?? It is my understanding that Ich can be on inverts, corals, live rock, live sand, But can only host fish..Which is why I am planning on a extensive control with TT and Qt

I did! But thanks for the heads up!

I dipped the coral before putting it in the DT with CoralRx. This treats the coral for many common nasties that could enter into your system by hitch hiking in on the coral, and it also aids in the corals health.

Even if this one coral DID carry in ich, over the next 7 weeks of my QT period left, its life cycle would most likely have ended.

Update:

Update:

Took out all 4 Koralia's and the Sicce power heads... replaced with Jebao wp25

*The HK nano's are still in the tank but not on ATM. wp25 is plenty by itself, but I may leave the nano's to turn on once in a while to blast behind the rocks.

Nice. I run a WP25 and a WP10 in my 65g and I have been very pleased with them. They are a great value.

Do you plan on taking Pumpkin out of QT before the weekend, running a second QT tank for the new clown, or are you going to put the new one with Pumpkin and start the QT clock over?
