First Marine Tank !

Hi people ! :wave: Firstly apologies for the essay , unfortunately I don't know anyone with a Marine Tank to pest and ask questions , so I'm solely reliant on you kind people on here giving advice and suggestions and reading up on as much knowledge as I can.

I have Recently purchased a second hand Juwel vision 180 and been researching like crazy as this is my first Tank and attempt at Marine, So far i have removed the 3D background and scraped all the silicone off (Background took a bit of persuading) as i didn't like the look. Still need to give the tank a good old rinse and clean using water and white vinegar (which I've seen is the best and safest way to do please correct me if I'm wrong) . To begin with I'm planning on leaving the Juwel internal filter in there and use that until i get a bigger bio-load and can fork out for a external (don't like the idea of a sump) Anyone any suggestions on what to put inside the internal filter (floss , any sponges at all as i know these can get clogged and cause nitrate problems) I will be cleaning the internal filter weekly to hopefully stop this But suggestions on whats best to have inside it would be much appreciated.

Also i have just purchased 20kg of dead live rock (see attached photos) for a bargain price of £20 as they were no longer using their tank and needed a quick sell , Anyone any idea of what type of rock it is and best ways to cure it ? should i leave a little bit of the rock as it is to put in the tank to help cycle it when i come round to cycling the tank ?

Not sure why you don't want a sump but that's what most people use. Unless you plan on running a HOB or external skimmer. I don't think very many people run a canister filter. Are you going to run a fish only tank?

Purely for budget reasons to begin with , I'm only starting slowly but surely. I will buy a skimmer at some point but just to get me started I'll be using the internal filter and live rock hopefully to do a lot of my filtration until i start adding more and more fish and coral's , but for the first few months the tank will only have a couple of fish and corals and cuc , so hopefully the internal filter and live rock will do the job.
 
When you upgrade I would add a sump. Petco $1/gal sale. You can make a sump for fairy cheap. Mine cost $50. Your not going to have room for much in a canister filter. If you plan on corals then I would plan on running a sump.

Not sure what is going on with that green rock but it could be algae.
 
Quality tank ! What are you using for filtration in there ? I Didn't Think Sump's were vital just that people preferred using them over different systems.
 
You can get by with out them but it's much better to have one. Of course if you like stuff hanging off the back of your DT tank and stuff in it. Your not going to fit a skimmer in a canister filter possibly not even heaters. Your sure not going to grow pods in one. Then again some people don't run skimmers. If your going to run some kind of external filter then I would use a sump but that's just me.

If it was me I'd bleach those rocks in a bucket and then give them a good rinse off and let dry out.

My two tanks are reefs and I don't have a sump for either one. I am using Fluval fx6 on both and each one has a skimmer. I have no problem with running it this way.

You can hid all the "stuff" by placing a overflow box

I'm not saying you can't run that way. You have a skimmer inside your Fluval? Probably a HOB skimmer on the DT right?

I'm not saying you can't. You can hide things to a certain extent if that's what you want to do. You could buy a HOB refugium as well. I'm not fan of putting stuff in the DT or on the DT but that's me. Why not hide everything in a sump instead of some in the DT and some in a canister is all I'm saying. It also depends on the style overflow box there is no way I could fit the right size heater in mine.

I attached a overflow box to hid my heater, HOB skimmer, and the intake of my filter.
 
Let me see you put something in a ghost overflow with less then 2" of space. The heaters I need are 10 to 12" long and my overflow is 6" long.

And where are u putting the heater after the 3 pipes are in the back box? Also the overflows that are big enough to fit that size heater wouldn't fit in my tank. Some ghost overflows don't even use the back box. Not all set ups are the same.

Again I never said u can't run that set up. I would rather not have stuff hanging off the back of my tank. You must think everyone has to have the same set up. Unless your using a canopy you can see stuff that is hanging on the back of the tank. Some people are ok with that but I think it's ugly. A sump has advantages to it.
