My first tank had a canister filter after I converted from a planted tank. My experience was that it was more work to maintain nutrient levels so I didnt have sky high nitrates but I also did not have a hang on back skimmer. Definitely can be done but may take a bit more time to maintain with more frequent water changes. Just get an action plan as you've done and ask questions. People here are willing to help if you are willing to ask and listen! I learn new stuff every day from here. A sump for me definitely made things easier but like I said, others may have a different opinion and find it easy haha.

What is more stable a 100 gallon tank or a 5 gallon tank? If something goes wrong more volume is more forgiving. If you make a mistake on a nano tank it's a bigger problem then a large tank.

I always spray paint the back (outside) of my tanks with flat\matte black paint then buy all black equipment. Gives a nice clean look if you don't wanna use a sump etc.

What is more stable? A good reef keeper. Again, this is not about keeping animals alive.
It's more about keeping water stable, then the animals will thrive. I have seen plenty of 5-gallon reef tanks that look better than people's 300 gallon systems

Yeah. Was great for my planted tank, not so much for a reef haha. I travel for work and I felt like any time I was home I was messing around with that dang canister. I upgraded purely so I didn't have to deal with that beast anymore haha.

It's less work to keep things suspended in the water column and let the skimmer take care of things.

I'd get quality equipment from the Jump and not "to begin with" I'll just... I did that, never again
Would rather wait and be certain it's user error than a hodgepodge of equipment. I would say that a skimmer rated way higher than the tanks volume is a must but, just cause I love my sump, you don't need one. IMO it's just a better way to remove waste and have stuff hidden. Also, you don't want the stuff that happens in a sump/fuge unfolding in your DT as many have said. It's all opinion and I wish you well. It's just my experience that technological advances have happened in this hobby over the years is a positive. You can " get away with" most anything but I prefer not learning the lessons of the past if I can avoid them. Have fun, go slow and read up.

I think you're missing the point. The op did'nt like the idea of a sump and asked if his live rocks and filtration would work for now, and I was simply showing him it would.

Another thing I would consider is the type of equipment you want to run. If you want to run an ATS I don't think you want that on top of the tank unless you like red light. If you want to run reactors you could hang them on the back of the tank if you want to ect. Another this to consider is noise a HOB filter or sump is going to make a waterfall noise and make salt spray.
