First Try Success

On friday my shipment from divers den came in and i had ordered the gold fuzzy dwarf lion and a mombasa lion. Yesterday i fed the mombasa ghost shrimp easily and then the fuzzy dwarf lion finally came out and ate.

Today i decided to try some silver sides on a kebab stick but the mombasa had no interest. I then thought that i would put it in the net that he has already associated with the ghost shrimp and he ate the silver side right up. Im pretty excited because i read that lions will take a while to get onto frozen and he did it first try for me. Now its time to try and get the fuzzy to eat

That's great its always a good feeling when you purchase a fish and it eats instantly. I love the mombasa great looking and doesn't get fairly large.

Yea, im defiantly ordering more fish from Divers Den. Its weird though because when i was reading about the fuzzy and mombasa, it seemed like the fuzzy would be the more active one but it is completely the other way around. The fuzzy rarely comes out with the halides on but gets more active when its just actinics so i will have to play it by ear to try and get him to eat.

My volitan was fairly active he would perch then swim for a little. I know some people who had fuzzy and they weren't active at all. When the lights go out is when they are moat active there hunting for food

It's possible that the Mombasa is the dominant lion in the tank (it will be the larger of the two fish eventually). However, IME, once they get "with the program", young fuzzies are about as active as lions come, and will typically be in the water column begging. Our P. mombassae are also very much the beggars, too, but so are all of our lions. I think it's a bit early to say that the fuzzy isn't as "interested" since they're brand new, but kudos on getting them to eat so early after shipping.

Be sure to post some pix...I'd love to see those fish colored-up.

The Mombasa is always begging. I'll come near the tank and he will come right out and stare at me waiting to see the net that i give him his food in. I will be posting up some pics once they settle in.

Very cool! I think you'll really dig the Mombasa...they're pretty and have great dispositions (and of course, like all lions, quickly become pets).

Good to hear. Once you get them both eating like that you will be good to go. Both really cool fish.

Well the fuzzy has now started eating some vitamin and garlic soaked krill just to get him started....The bad news is when i came home tonight, the Mombasa's eyes are completely clouded and look swollen.......my luck. The worse part is he seems blind because he hasnt moved and when i move my hand in front of the glass he doesnt flinch.

Argh! The first thing I'd think is water quality, so do check your water. Mombasas can be kinda touchy that way sometimes. Without seeing the fish, I'd guess that it's probably bacterial in nature if it's an infection, so if you treat, I'd go with a course of Furan 2 altho it might be Crypto (check the fins and body for cysts).

Lionfishes' eyes do cloud over a bit before a molt, but not to the point of them being blind.

yea i cant be sure if hes blind or not...during the night he moved from the front corner of the tank to the back middle so maybe hes not. I had just done a water change yesterday so ill be checking my water right now. Ill see if i can manage a picture asap as well

Ok i tested the water and the params are:
Ph: 8.1
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate:5-10ppm (cant be sure because colors are almost identical on card)
Ammonia: 0
Salinity: 1.019

Looks bacterial to me...I'd go with a course of Furan 2. Also, if you can get the temp down to 74*F, it may slow the progress of the infection.
