I'm thinking about starting up a fluval edge 12 gallon reef tank.
Just need some ideas for hardy nano tank/small fish and hardy beginner corals.
I'd like a sea fan, but can't seem to find much info on those. There is so much info out there, it is hard because there are so many varying opinions. Hoping that with input from you guys, I can see some consistency on recommendations for a 12 gallon reef tank and fish. Thank you.

I like sharknose gobies (Like the neon but with a yellow nose)
Some bigger fish would be clowns, possum/pink streak wrasse, and firefish

+1^ they are awesome with that small of a tank though you are really only going to want to put one fish in there. Maybe some inverts but anything that small even a pair of clowns is pushing it. Maybe a clown goby and one more fish would be ok but 12 gallons is really easy to overstock. The reasoning behind is is the gas exchange or oxygenation of the water, and the bioload (which can be taken care of with WC and proper equipment)so this is JMHO. I would stick to 1 or 2 fish tops and some bad a** corals!

Those make horrible reef tanks. Hard to access and poor gas exchange. Get a regular 10 or 20 long.

+1. If I understand correctly they're sealed at the top, so you're always going to have low Oxygen which in turn leads to a low pH. Bad for fish, good for Algae.

Standard 10 gallon tank, Light (Compact fluorescent, 4 bulb T5 fixture or LED), waaayyyyy over-sized HOB (I prefer AquaClear) filter filled with live rock rubble and a bag of carbon, heater, stand...BAMMM!-Reef Tank.

If you want a more modern look, go with an Oceanic Biocube.

Trust me on this. Good luck. :)
