fish die-off

Hi All,

Newbie here, looking for some experienced eyes on my situation, and some guidance.

First, I am an american living in Cambodia, with my first saltwater setup (DT: ~100 gallon FOWLR with built-in sump, skimmer, UV, wet/dry) + (2 tomato clowns, scopas tang, 1 yellow dwarf angel). About 4 weeks ago i noticed white spots on my tang and angel. Pretty sure it was crypto. I moved them all to the QT and began hyposalinity. Would have considered copper, but could not find this here in Cambodia. within ~2days i could see no evidence of parasite. fish looked, ate avidly, and behaved well throughout. water parameters in DT and QT were great (0Amm/0Nitrite/0Nitrate,PH8.2). After 10 days i notice black spots on the tang. black ich! So i did freshwater baths with temp and pH matched water. once every three days x 3. black ich gone after the first bath. things were going fine. i was happy with myself. the fish were eating well, swimming around QT happily, breathing regularly, etc. Then ~5 days ago, the scopas starts floating to top, seemed distressed. looked like swim bladder syndrome. Decided to wait it out and did ~50% water change. Still, water parameters looked perfect. it seemed to resolve after 2 days (i decreased feeding a bit), then all 4 fish in QT started to be listless. At this point did another 50% water change, but fish were in a downward spiral. no visual evidence of disease that i could see on bodies, fins, or gills. Scopas and one clown died yesterday. I did another water change. Dwarf angel dead this morning. the last clown seems weak and i expect it to die today. Sad.

So does anyone have any ideas of what might have happened? they just seemed to crash and burn so quickly after looking pretty good for weeks. Any advice on how to figure out what went wrong or how to prevent it in the future?

How big is your QT tank? I would suspect ammonia poisoning or lack of oxygen. Crypto does not kill that quickly.

Thanks julie180! The QT is about 50gal. i checked the ammonia and it read zero, so did nitrtites. I also doubt crypto, because they were in great shape for a couple weeks and then just went south fast. any thoughts on other things i could be missing?

My advise would be to fallow your DT for 72 days to rid it of what ever could be in there. I am not sure about black ich, you need to read up on it to make sure fallow will kill it.

Tank transfer method and 6 week QT will assure you don't introduce any new parasites into your tank.

PS, just because you don't see evidence of crypto on the fish, does not mean its cured. There are several life cycle stages of the parasite, and only 1 attaches to the fish. The others are laying in wait to attach or busy multiplying!

The only other thing I can think of is a new addition, coral, fish, rock, etc brought something in, or maybe your temperature got so high in the QT that it depleted o2.

There is a wealth of information over in the fish disease forum.

Thanks again, julie180! Still a bit of a mystery, but i'm at least glad to hear that i did not miss anything super obvious. I'll check out the fish disease forum, too. I also wonder if something poisonous was introduced into the QT. We had a party at our house on the day before the death spiral, and i had to ask one of the visiting kids to get their hand out of the QT. Anyways, i appreciate you giving my problem some thought. Always good to learn from folks with more experience.

Certainly possible a party guest could have dropped something in the tank.

I also noticed you mentioned about 2 weeks before this happened. Just tossing it out there but, if your fish source had used a therapeutic dose of copper on the fish about 2 weeks would be right for something to present if it had been masked by the copper.

Thanks Tony! I actually did not use copper. I cannot find any medicines here in Cambodia (actually i did find one at the LFS which was about 7 year expired!). I just used hyposalinity. I will probably pick up a stock of meds when i get back to the states in a couple months for home leave.

He was not saying you used copper, but your fish store. When fish stores run low levels of copper in their tanks, it does not cure problems, just keeps them from presenting. When we get fish home and out of the low dose copper, it take a few weeks for the problems to present.

Oh. That's sneaky and unethical. And something I would never have guessed. Live and learn.... Any thoughts on how to manage that dynamic, besides quarantine?

QT is how I handle it. After I do TTM the critters go into my main QT for 4-5 weeks, work schedule. This gives me 6-7 weeks to observe for anything that may pop up unexpectedly. I also do 2 rounds of prazipro for internal parasites.

QT with meds. Depends on the source of the fish.

When did you get these fish? When did you put them in the display? When did you add wet items?

Hi tkeracer619,

I put the 2 clowns in at the start of April (did not qt); i got the scopas and angel in mid-february, and put them in the DT after 2 weeks in QT on 8 march. no additional wet items since before fish (while cycling tank). does that help the investigation?

For anyone interested, I think i figured out what happened. Our housekeeper sprayed the tank with insecticide, i believe. Some mosquitoes like to be near the water. explains the rapid death spiral.

Oh, my. So sorry. If you can get PolyFilter pads, that might help remove the poison: it absorbs a range of organic and metallic problems.

Welcome to RC nonetheless! Very sorry for the fish loss. Had our annual pest control fuming earlier and this post had me driving back home to check on my tank!

PS. I do sympathize with having problems on LFss not fully stocked as the country i'm currently based in (Qatar) hasn't caught up with the reefing craze :D
