Fish dying need help asap

My domino suddenly had white spots appear on him this morning. I am going to make a guess that it is ich. I want to understand if ich is something that I caused by over feeding or due to stress. Recently the dominos home was taken from him by my week old maroon clown fish. I think I will give him the fresh water bath for two minutes and then put him in a little 3 gallon tank with salt water. Any suggestions will help as I only started my tank about 1.5 months ago. In the tank is a blue devil, a maroon, and a black domino. Invert are 5 brittle starfish, 1 arrow crab, 4 hermits, and 3 turbo snails. I dont have any medications but do have access to many foods like selcon and what not. My main tank is only 20 gallons.

Look at the stickies on ich at the top of this forum. Lots of good information.

Sounds like you will have to treat all of your fish to be safe.

Good luck!

I went to one of my fish professors and he said I described fin rot instead of ich. The fish was only $4 so I am not going to get any medication for him but I did give him a hyposalintiy treatment for 10 minutes and I performed a 5 percent water change and added some stress coat to the tank. Ph is a little low at 8.0. My alkalinity may be whats causing the fish stress but I dont have an alkalinity test so I dont know. I dont have a quarantine tank so after the hyposalinity test I put him back into the main tank. He looks significantly worse after the hyposalinty bath, it looks like the only thing left to do is pray. Fin rot does not usually jump from one fish to another so I am not to worried about my other damsel or maroon picking up the disease.

The more you dip and hypo your fish back and forth the worst he will get. FW dips do nothing more than stress out a fish, and they don't have any affect on ick. If it really is ick you will have to treat all your fish with hypo in your QT. Or copper if you must, but leave your main tank fallow for 6-8weeks. If its ick your fish will look like he has salt all over him.

So far I have ruled out ich and now think it is fin rot. This was my first time doing the hypo bath and although it did seem very stressful he did recover well enough and now only time will tell. I will try and get some pictures up, it is just I have a bad camera and I can rarely get a good shot. How long can fin rot last on a fish? I mean is he doomed if this persists for 1 week or longer? If the fish is doomed id rather give him a quick and painless death. I heard fin rot rarely transfers occupants and mainly is a stress issue.

Try melafix for the fin rot, a natural antibiotic. Fwd is useless on fin rot. All you did was cause him more stress. Try the melafix.

i put the domino in a 3.5 gallon acrylic tank with an air stone and plan on doing 15% water changes everyday. Assuming my domino starts to eat I will be dosing his food with selcon to fatten him up for his eventual return to the main tank. He seems to be in better shape since the QT even though it is not the best environment for QT.

the domino has passes. the main tank will be upgraded with 6.8watts of lighting, amazing water chemistry, and more live rock before any more additions of fish or coral. Hopefully a cheap 5 gallon QT can be made as well.
