Dear HBH Customers,
Today HBH was notified by one of our contract feed manufacturers that the Aqua-tech II binder currently under voluntary recall was used in the manufacturing of some of our feeds. The Aqua-tech II binder was found to contain Melamine. HBH was previously unaware that the Aqua-tech II feed binder was being added to our products. It is an unapproved feed ingredient. HBH will be making every effort to investigate the failures relating to the adulteration of our contracted product.
The FDA and Center for Veterinary Medicine have issued an interm safety/risk assessment. It concludes that “in the most extreme risk scenario, when scientists assumed that all the solid food a person consumes in an entire day contained melamine and the melamine compound cyanuric acid in equal amounts, the potential exposure is about 250 times lower than the dose considered safe. This is a large safety margin. Translated to consumption levels, this means that a person weighing 132 pounds would have to eat more than 800 pounds per day of food containing melamine and its compounds to approach a level of consumption that would cause a health concern.â€Â(FDA press release May 30, 2007)
Melamine, however, is not an approved animal feed ingredient as stated by the FDA and AAFCO. Therefore, pursuant to our recall protocol standards HBH Pet is initiating a voluntary recall of all of our products containing the pellets purchased from this contract manufacturer.
HBH uses this pellet product in many of its diet blends. Because HBH was not aware of the contamination until today, it is possible that all feeds listed below regardless of lot # could contain trace amounts of Melamine. HBH will replace all product returned to its facility with new product.
