I have this puffer who dose not like silver sides. I couldn't make it to the LFS so I bought frozen raw shrimp. I thawed two shrimp and fed it to him and he ate it like it the best he ever had. My eels and lion fish thought it was good too. Dose anyone else do this? Is it cheaper than the LFS? Everyone seems to be happy about it.

If you go to the nem forum they talk about how you should go to your local store and get raw shrimp from them and it is much better than silver sides since the quality control on silver sides is pathetic since it isn't for human consumption. The raw shrimp is also better for nutritional value for them as well I believe.

I used fresh squid for my puffer. Puffers generally do not eat fish.

My puffer from 1.5 inch to his massive 8.5 inch only ate squid.
I wish I still had him.

I have read that Puffers should never be fed Krill, even though they love it, because it causes them to get lockjaw. I do not know if that carries over to shrimp. It wouldn't be a bad idea to dig around a little.

I found this:
Puffers will eat all types of food and should be fed a variety of meaty foods such as shrimp, fish, clams, etc., along with a supplement of vegetable fare to provide necessary nutrients. It is also important to provide hard shelled crabs, mussels, and shellfish in their diet to wear down their teeth and prevent them from overgrowing. Puffers are semi-aggressive and should be kept one per tank. They will eat smaller fishes and should not be housed with any delicate slow-moving species.

Try the asian market in phoenix by the air port they have all kinds of great fresh sea foods to choose from including live fish and crabs. Use to make all my own fish foods in a blender or just chopped up with stuff from there.

+1 Asian markets are one stop shopping for boat loads of awesome diy food, nori, seafoods of all kinds, agar agar etc. they pretty much have it all. Take it home and blend to desired size. I want to try some oysters next.. well, no, I want my fish/corals to try oysters..

Lee Lee's on the east side

Lee Lees on the west side too, 75th and cactus, definitely tons of fresh and live seafood to choose from for your own blend.

Try the oysters. They're great with a little Tabasco and a nice chilled chardonnay. komamotos are the best.

Puffers should not be fed a lot of fish, it causes fatty liver. Shell fish is better. Oysters on the half shell are good. I had a porcupine puffer that wouldn't eat for the first 2 weeks I had him out of desperation I dropped an orange crab in from my reef tank. He gobbled it right up, that's all he would eat! Expensive taste!

Proving my point. Don't forget the nice chardonnay.
