fish food

Was just curious as to what type of food people use on their tanks. Do certain fish prefer certain foods. Looking to place order and Dr. F&S and was wondering what type of food I should get. If it helps, have clown, pep. hogfish, and lemonpeel angel.

Also, what does washing frozen food mean?

i make my own ( plus buy formula 1) shrimp, mussel, crab, nori, cloved garlic, lettuce, some fruits, broccoli, put it in a food processor with alittle tank water..make into mush..to what ever consistancy i like..put mixture into zip lock roll it out so i can break peices off and feed daily..i use phyto for corals.

I've kept tanks that I never fed for a year, ones where I just fed the fish dry food (cyclopeeze or ocean nutrition dry food) and phytoplankton (DTs), and the good way like vtfishies mentioned.
I do something similar now: Misc seafood, selcon, cyclopeeze, some dry food and a cup of tank water in a blender then freeze it in an icecube tray - one cube per day feeds my 40 breeder tank (melted) and a teaspoon of DTs every other day. Growth has been MUCH better this way. It will feed everything in the tank because when you blend it it makes particles right for the different sized mouths of all the critters and corals in your tank (and your fish)

Read what melev does: http://www.melevsreef.com/food.html or Eric Borneman's book on corals - that's where I got the idea for feeding this way and my corals.

Thanks for the info. Now what is the term washing the foods mean if you use just the frozen food pellets from stores?

Some frozen foods are treated with phosphates and other preservatives/color enhancers. Washing the food helps remove these residues.

some people will thaw the food, separate it from the water its was packaged in, the rinse it with some fresh salt water, or RO water. personally i just thaw the food in some tank water, and pour the whole thing in. but stick with good brands of foods. Hikari packed their foods pre-rinsed, and sterile. San Francisco Bay Brand nor Ocean Nutrition brand has never let me down either.

as far as what to feed. the key is variety! most fish will eat mysis, and brine. i mix my own food as well most the time. but i dont feed anything that is not from the ocean (not necessarily grown in the ocean). most of your fish are meat lovers, but the clown and angel will need some veggie material as well. Ocean Nutrition Formula Two is a great one for them. just mix it up, krill, cyclop-eez, enriched brine shrimp (theres several flavors :)), mysis, and the frozen plankton are all things your fish will enjoy.

All those food additive are what allows the Griswold family to afford all those vacations. :D
