Just a general question, If I'm planning an upgrade in the future would it be okay to get a small one and house him in a 55g for a few years until I upgrade?

not to hijack the thread but yes fsu that would be fine. most marine bettas in lfs are around the 4 inch area. after a couple years it may be around 6 inches and about time to get a bigger tank. good luck selling those fish
