I catch fish here and there for a state marine research center and caught a few of these for them. They were swarming together on a rock about 20 of them and I caught about 8 to bring to them. They don't know what they are but would love to get an ID I thought y'all you be able to help us out with this

where did you catch them?
a location would be much more easier to id the fish.

The location of where I caught it was all described in the video description. It was caught off the coast mississippi

I agree, probably mangrove snapper

There are a lot of cool critters that you can catch on the Gulf coast. I grew up in NOLA and fished the gulf for many years. I sure do miss the smell of saltwater :( Yeah I know I've got a saltwater tank, but trust me it's not the same. The salt/brackish water marshes have their own special smell, kinda like oysters. Probably is at low tide. :D
