In a few months I will be moving to 180 mixed reef. Here is my first iteration of the list of fish I would like to eventually have in the tank. Please offer suggestions for other fish and also any conflicts you may see. I'm am not set on any of the wants except the blue spot and mandarin mated pair. So if there is something that will not work with them it can go :).

Currently Have
1 - Yellow Tang
1 - Mated pair of False Clowns
3 - Glass/Longfin/Blue eyed Cardinal

Want
1 - Blue Spotted Jawfish
1 - Mated pair Mandarins
2 or 4 - Glass/Longfin/Blue eyed Cardinal
1 - Wrasse (colorful & peaceful) - I have seen the six line and like the look but there are other ones available. If possible two different types that can coexist together. Like a six line and some other type.
5 - Lyretail Anthias
1 - Other tang that does not get too large ( Thinking Chevron or Kole)
1 - Angel (Reef safe) if possible

Thanks,

Henry

sounds pretty good other then the mandarins not sure if there would be enough copepods to keep them both alive IMO but ill let someone else with experience with them give you more information

mystery Wrasse would be a great addition, however, he is going to compete and ultimately win the war over who gets to eat more pods. I think your mandarins are going to suffer if you dont think carefully about your Wrasse purchase.

Other than that I really like your list, another suggestion about a Surgeon would be a TOMINI---- Great fish, bristlemouth like your other suggestions too-

Mystery and sixline would beat the crap out of each other... its happened to me.

I'd go with something other than either of those. Like some flasher or fairy wrasses.

I'd definitely go with a wrasse that eats from the water column as opposed to one that picks at the rocks. A pair or trio of flasher wrasses would be cool. (make sure you have a VERY tight fitting top though, they can squeeze through ~1/4" opening.) chances are, a 6-line or mystery wrasse would leave your mandarins hungry in no time.

Also, I wouldn't bet on any angelfish being completely reef safe. You better like the angel more than the corals if you want to go that route.

Thanks for the feedback...I will look into the flasher wrasses and yes I do not want anything that will compete with the mandarin pair. I can scratch the 6 line wrasse and look into the flasher wrasses. I will research a Tomini Tang as well. I am still on the fence with the angel fish but they are so hit or miss it may be good to scratch them as well.

MCCOOL,
Is there a major difference flasher and fairy wrasses...the colors are amazing with both groups? Thanks for the suggestion...this will add a nice splash of color to the tank!

Thanks,

Henry

Flasher wrasses are from the genus Paracheilinus, while fairy's are from the genus Cirrhilabrus.

most flasher wrasses stay fairly small, and are, for the most part, peaceful. Fairy wrasses vary more within the genus, some are small, docile and timid, while others are larger, and more biosterous.

All wrasses require a very tight lid, as they are expert jumpers.

with that said, i'm far from an expert, so take this as very general advice. there are numerous people here who know way more than me, so a second opinion is always helpful.

MCCOOL - Thanks I think I will go with the flasher wrasse...now its just deciding which ones.

solitude127 - Yes I plan on having some type of netting on the tank to prevent them from jumping out. I had two Jawfish carpet surf before and it is not a pretty site.

I started a build thread for my tank so I am moving this topic over to my thread My 180 Upgrade

Sixlines will decimate the pod population as has been stated and my experience is that these fish are very aggressive with passive fish sooner or later. I would go with a small group of flashers like the Carpenter's or McCoskers and go with a more mellow species of anthias like Bartlett's since lyretails can be aggressive with passive fish as well.

Its been years since I have done a system that didnt have at least one angel and the most reliably reef safe are the genicanthus, you could even do a pair in a tank that size, I like the bellus and the watanabei.

I would go with the Chevron for the other tang, and a Flame Angel or even a Potter's angel would be nice. One of my favorite angels is the Gold Flake angel. They are pretty pricey but are gorgeous in my book. No angel is reef safe, but some are better than other's is pretty much hit or miss. From what I've heard they like the more fleshy type corals and tend to leave SPS alone.

Kahuna Tuna - I think based on the suggestions from people the six line is out, I am going with the a small group of flashers instead. In my 180 Upgrade thread I posted the following as nominees for flashers.
Carpenter's Flasher Wrasse
McCosker's Flasher Wrasse
Blue Flasher Wrasse
Red Tailed Flasher Wrasse

I also saw a Peacock Flaser Wrasse but can not find much info on them. If anyone knows please inform me.

Good point about the Anthias I will look today for another colorful yet peaceful group.

scubasteve06 - That Gold Flake angel is amazing! But his appetite for corals may not make it in my tank. Flame is another pretty fish. I forgot how bright they are.

any of the flasher wrasses listed would be fine

I love my trio of Pseudanthias Dispar, they don't harass each other like bartletts or lyretails (atleast they haven't started to yet, i've only had them for about 2 months), and they weren't impossible to get eating.

MCCOOL - That is a colorful Anthias as well.

From more reading should I keep the Anthias in groups of 4? One male and three females. I am not planning on getting Anthias from online I know they are notorious for being hard to get to feed. I hope I can get one of my local pet stores to order them for me. We will see how that goes though since depending on the fish my local store may not be able to get it.

I have a male and 2 females, with no problems so far. I ordered mine from liveaquaria and have always been very pleased with them.

I really like your wrasse choices. I'm considering among some of those as well. Hopefully they won't decimate my large population of baby stomatellas!
