Fish list: Give me your opinions please

Here's my list for a 40 gallon hex reef tank. It's the style that is 36" long:

- Neon Dottyback (got 2 days ago)
- Yellow Watchman Goby to go with Pistol Shrimp
- Flame Angel
- Leopard Wrasse
- Yellow Stripe Maroon Clown

What does everyone think?

Also, I was told that a Leopard Wrasse would eat all my hermit crabs. Is there any truth to that?
 
Flame angel is not reef safe, they tend to pick at corals, shrooms, most LPS juviniles. wrasse are known to be jumpers, never had mine mess with snails or jump. pistol shrimp can break glass tanks. 2 clowns are always better than one. not shooting you down or doggin'n. just experienced. REEF-ON!!!
 
also, with that many fish in a 40g you will need a good filter system for ammonia. i would not introduce all of them at once, to much bio-load. slow additions are always best in SW. REEF-ON!!!

Lots of people have pistol shrimp with gobies. My flame angle has given no problems in the 7 months that it has been in my reef. Can't comment on the wrasse or the dottyback. Agree that clowns do best in pairs.

Best advice, do some research on this forum. The search function works great if you are a premium member.

I love GSmaroon clowns, but they get big and "nasty" They won't allow anything in in about a 20-30g area that is not tied down. Like when you're putting corals in their territory, for instance. They can move rocks/coral that you'd never imagine

Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like I may need to re-think my list. As far as the Pistol Shrimp is concerned, I don't have much of a choice, because it came in my live rock. I've only seen it once, but it's definitely still in there. So, I thought I'd get a Watchman Goby to pair up with it.

I really like the Flame Angels, but I don't like the idea of it it picking on my corals. I had one before, and didn't have problems with it, but I only had it for a few months before a 12-hour power outage took it.

I've always heard that Clowns do better together, but I have two Bubble Corals and three Toadstool Leathers. I'm hoping that the Clown or pair would hang out in the Toadstools, but if they take up residence in my Bubble Corals, I think I'd have a disaster on my hands. If I only had one, I think the Bubble Coral could take it, but not with two. That's the only reason I'm thinking one Clown instead of two. Would a pair of Maroons still be wise?

I've been thinking, and I agree that lowering the amount of fish I have would be wise, especially since I'm only running a protein skimmer and refugium. So, if it were between the Flame Angel, Leopard Wrasse, and a Flame or Arc Eye Hawk, which would y'all go with?

Most of the damage, if any, will be done by the larger female. Picture a 4-5 in fish wiggling around in the coral it chooses. It may only take her a year or 2 to reach this size. If it were me, I wouldn't consider a maroon unless I was providing her/them with an anemone.

A pair of oscellaris would be an excellent choice in my opinion & much less contribution to the bioload as they stay much smaller than maroons & spend less time on their host anemone or coral than a maroon clown does. Even if you had 1 maroon & 1 oscellaris of the same size I'd say the oscellaris would be less stress on a coral than the maroon.

PS Pairing maroon clowns is a lot more complicated than pairing the other clownfish. You shouldn't attempt it without reading up on the subject of maroon pairing to make sure you don't cause the death of the potential mate. 2 maroons that refuse to pair always fight to the death.

I don't think a flame angel would be "happy" in a 44 g hex - perching fish like the hawks are a better way to go :D
 
Thanks for the input everyone. Looks like I'll be waiting on the Maroon Clowns for a larger tank. Oh well. I'd like to have the Flame Angel in there, but if it is not going to be happy, I don't want that. I'll look into the Hawkfish for the next addition. O.k.........with the Neon Dottyback and an Orange Spot Watchman Goby that I added today, what should I add next? The Hawkfish or Clown pair?
 
yeah brad i told you to go for the black perc... but yeah umm check out my post there are some possible tanks that i want you to look at possibly

Even then the Mantis would have to be huge.
 
So, everyone thinks a Leopard Wrasse is a bad addition to a 40-45 gallon hex reef tank, is that correct? If it is a matter of it jumping out, I can solve that with some mesh or something, but if there are other reasons, I'll definitely re-think this.
