Fish Max growth questions

Hello everyone,

I've been researching on fish growth, specially some big fish such as tangs. I have seen people keep them (specially yellow tang) in a fairly small tank. Then when after my research, it says that they could grow up to 7 or 8 inches.

I have a 180 with 60"Lx30"Hx24"W. I still feel like it's too big for my tank to have a 7 or 8 inches fish. Am I missing something? or may be those fish will stay a little smaller because of captivity?

Thanks.

Rarely will fish get their max size as mention on places like LA. Captivity and diet are two main factors in this

I do believe some fish can never reach there adult size in captivity. My dad had a yellow tang and a purple tang in a 180 gallon tank for almost 16 years before he broke the tank down and neither ever passed 4-5" in length. A close friend of mine had a hippo tang in a 225 gallon for something like 11 years before his tank crashed and it never passed 6 inches. Now don't get me wrong, I've seen (and believe) many fish easily reach there full adult size in captivity but I also believe there are exceptions to the rule. Just my 2 cents

Fish growth rates will drop off significantly after a certain point. Tangs for example I have noticed will rapidly reach 5-6" with growth rates at that point dropping significantly. Keep in mind fish grow until they die, how fast they do depends on the food they eat and the conditions they are kept in.
