The names "Walmart of fishstores" and "Superstore" remind me of stores like PetCo and PetSmart. Sure they have the basics in an emergency, esp for FW. But I think when these stores get "big" I think they get mainly bigger in the FW dept. Take Capital for instance, lots of fish FW selection generally but not that much corals, which are mainly brown softies with hardly LPS or SPS. But, Walmart is supposed to have everything in it, so I don't think these newer places will be as one stop as they sound. But I like having competition, diversity, and options....I say the more the merrier. Just means more time out of the house "Fish Storin" on the weekends.
I am interested to see if the stores start to really get into thier own niches and run with them.(For instance O st usually has a good selection of LPS, but not SPS), In fact thats kinda how these stores are now anyway now that I think of it, and why I find the "best store" discussions laughable.
Personaly, I am looking foward to John's plans at Yourreef and getting into the high end and specialized SPS. I would love a store like Atlantis here in Sacramento. But is there the customer base for it? Probably with Internet sales in conjunction, which we know Yourreef does have........But I am biased towards SPS. I am curious about sales figures though. How many FW $1.99 guppies does it take to even out on the tanks, water, and labor....vs the equipment and sensitivity of keeping rare SPS, but selling a half inch piece for $80. So ulitimatly they only people that "really" know are the owners of these stores and the rest of us are just watching and waiting.
So I am curious also Karl, is the FW community large enough to support all of the "superstores" and "Walmarts" since that is what they seem to be a large part of their stock. I think we are soon to find out.
