Fish Recommendations

I've been down on my luck lately when it comes to keeping fish. (My corals are all doing outstanding so I know it's not the water.) But that might just be because I keep buying fish that are going to die; I've gone through three tangs so far and my last, a sailfin, died because he threw himself into a powerhead (I got home to find him like that; survived initially, died a day or two later). It's always been a dream of mine to own a tang but suppose this dream needs to be postponed.
Honestly I'm about to throw in the towel and just buy a handful of damsels..

Now I am just looking for fish that add movement and hopefully color to my tank. They need to be able to fit comfortably in my 70gal topless reef.
Can anyone give me some suggestions?

Unless it is a 6 foot tank I would stay away from any tang really. There are a lot of good and fairly easy fish you could go with.

Flame Angel/Coral Beauty make for a decent centerpiece.
Most clown fish species will do great.

Unless you cover your tank with some sort of mesh stay away from from the wrasses and other carpet surfers.

Orchid Dotty Backs.
Royal Gramma
Bangaii Cardinals.
Just check out some of the online retailers and read up on some fish.

They aren't too hard to take care of. Maybe a easy to mid level. Where have you been getting your fish? What do you already have in there right now?

Right now I have a small (3in) Christmas wrasse, red scooter blenny, and small snowflake eel (11in)
I've had a fish from almost every LFS: AD, YR, AquaLife, Jojos..

The snowflake eel could be a problem. I am not sure what other kind of fish you have lost but they are known to try and take out other fish at times depending on the temperament. So that could be a potential problem. Have you tried testing your water lately?

I usually do recommend aquarium depot and aqualife. I have had some good luck with them and haven't lost a single fish in the last 3 years from them in my current tank. Makes me because healthy fish don't typically end up in power heads.

I know; I watch my eel very carefully. He's not the type to go after my fish; at most he'll snap at a shrimp that walks too close to his den. Other than that he keeps totally to himself

Yea, just try to keep him well fed and happy. They tend to be more prey driven at night though. Without knowing the health of the fish when you got them and the parameters of your tank right now its kinda hard to rule anything out.

I'm with this guy.

I had a hard time keeping Tangs myself in my tiny 90Gal. I recommend firefish of all variations and either a coral beauty or flame angel. :spin2:

Good Luck!

If you want a tang try one of the bristletooth tangs. Kole, tomini, two spot, square tail, white tail are all good options.
