Fish Slight ICK all the time...?

Hello,

I have a 350 gallo fish with about 10 fish in it.. There is no hard core fighting, lots of hiding spaces in the live rock, I keep the lights on for only a few hours a day and feed on a daily basis.

I usually do 100 gallon water changes every 3 weeks or so, and have some of the best filtration on the tank (I.E. UV light, Protien skimmer, lots of live rock, media balls, and polishing pads)... But the problem Im running into is that the Puffer fish I have a few other fish always seem to have a slight case of ICK. The most hardiest fish have slick Ick while my most sensitive tangs dont have any ICK and are extremely healthy.

Why may this be?

What do you feed them and how often? For me feeding quality frozen food is the number one way to get rid of ich. Keep them fat and happy and let them fight it off naturally.

Fighting it off naturally is great; if fish were in their natural environment with quad-zillions gallons of water. But our tanks do not allow this to happen. If you had ich in the tank, did nothing, it will be back. Even if fish dined at 5-star restaurants every day.

I just dont know about that. I'm kinda in the "Paul B" camp when it comes to ich. Paul you care to help me out on this? :)

I'm a Paul B fan myself... but it should be noted that his methods will never completely eradicate Ich from your tank. His methods are designed to boost your fishes' immune systems to the point where they are in "breeding condition" and can fight parasites/ailments off naturally. But it can never completely eradicate parasites from the water. They will always be there and the fight goes on indefinitely.

It takes a long time to get fish to the point where they are in "breeding condition". It's not a quick fix to an Ich problem. If the OP had been using Paul's methods from Day 1, on all of his fish, then maybe he wouldn't be seeing Ich on any of the fish right now. But you can't just start in the middle and expect it to save your fish.

Yup, completely agree with you..... I didn't say it was going to be a quick fix though.

What the heck is "slick ich?" Is that where they are kept in oil instead of water, and they get ich?

I see my name mentioned all over this thread and you are correct. He will not cure his fish by feeding well. Feeding well will prevent his fish from ever getting sick, but obviousely, he didn't feed correctly. It is also true that my methods will not eradicate ich from my tank. I don't care, Ich can live all they want in my tank. I am sure it is in there as for the last 35 or so years I have added fish from every store in New York including the Atlantic Ocean and ich never bothers my tank.
But as was said. I keep my fish in breeding condition by feeding live foods. Frozen foods along won't do it and if you just feed pellets and flakes, you may as well just step on your fish now as you will always be posting on a fish disease forum.
Yes, of course you can quarantine everything and that may keep ich out of your tank. It also may kill some of the fish you are quarantining as the act of quarantining "may" actually bring on ich. But if your fish are not in breeding condition through live food, quarantining is your only hope.
MrTuskfish is an excellent aquarist, we just differ in our quarantine beliefs.
My fish don't dine in 5 star restaurants, they would but the 5 star restaurants I eat at don't always serve worms.
My method obviousely works as some of my fish are 20 years old and still spawning. All my fish are spawning and they laugh at ich. No, really, it is annoying as they are laughing now and sometimes they laugh all night. :lmao:
Ich may be good for a tank. A very healthy tank, as it will keep the fish immunity in top shape so ich will not bother them. Ijust got a flu shot, a shingles shot and a pneumonia shot which means I have all those disease organisms in my body (they tickle) I am sure you know why we put those things in our body. Think about it.
