fish to eat zoas

Hey there,

any suggestions on a fish that will eat zoanthid, protopalythoa and not tear up sps?

thanks

I have yet to find a fish that will eat protopalythoa... I recently swapped out half my rockwork due to protopalythoa taking over the rocks.

Havnt had any fish including angels eat protopalys either, I think these must have the palytoxin because whenever I frag they slime up pretty bad unlike my zoas/largerzoas(palys) . The protopalys I have are nuke greens, purple deaths, captain americas, mindblowing, neon green button palys, morning mist. I dont think a zoa eating nudi will take care of protopalys either.

My matted file fish took out all my zoas along with the aiptasia. The small amount of paly's have been untouched for a year.

bummer...thanks for the info.. haven't had much luck getting rid of these guys. Took all the rock out once and cooked it, even spiked it with kalkwasser and the paly survived. Manual removal will thin them out, the come back with a vengeance and straglers that get away colonize in other areas. Tried covering them with monti cap and they grow over the cap. Injecting them with kalkwasser doesn't do much
Has anyone tried a majano wand?

here's a pick of the punks, dead center

If you can get the rock out a propane or MAP torch can do the trick.

Keep in mind that burning anything on live rock is dangerous business. Many reports of sickness regarding palytoxin and who knows what else being inhaled. Use proper protective equipment if you go this route.

try and find a laser to burn them......at least it would make you feel better:uzi:

looks like you're going to have to remove that whole rock, and try and chip off any corals attached that you still want. I would not try the lazer, who knows what the palys will release in your tank and could possibly cause a crash.

I've seen humu triggers eat zoas as well as possibly a gold spot rabbit fish. Don't know about those ones in particular though. I would try majano wand or laser just a few polyps at a time 2x a week with recommended carbon for water volume changed every two weeks.. Palyotoxin would have crashed my tanks many times over if slightly damaging them caused a tank crash. Or take the rock out, save your prized corals and store it in blacked out sump for a few months while they wither away. If you want to speed it up sprinkle(burn) with dry Kalk weekly and cycle in separate 5g bucket.

honestly is ask your lfs if any Pygmy angels have been returned as polyp nippers and buy one that's already been convicted lol

Sundial snails eat zoas... Maybe paly too? Or get a piece with zoa pox :)

You could try rolling out a small sheet of epoxy putty and covering them. Ugly but should work if you don't want to take the rock out. Be fareful with those, a guy in the UK got squirted in the face and later lost an eye. I was picking some off a rock, washed my hands well and about 30 mins later are some chips. The result was numb burning lips, sweating, fever like symptoms and nausea.
