i have a black and white buterfly fish. who has a bad case of popeye.

i am treating with melafix and she is recovering (swelling is much better) but she is trying to eat and cant see properly to get food.

she wont have eaten now since saturday or sunday and i am starting to worry. It is heartbreaking watching her go for the food and missing.

does anyone have any ideas about how i can feed her.

target feed, or what i like to do is put the food in your fingertips and let the fish come to you and nip the food, dont release the food let the fish see it and come and get it

A fish can go for a couple of weeks without food. I would keep up the Melifix and she (or he) should be eating in a few days. Whats encouraging is that she is trying to eat.

Good Luck. Let us know how it goes. :)

thanks it is she "NIKKITA".

I am encouraged that she is trying to eat it just breaks my heart watching her strike but miss.

the other think which worries me was i only had her eating for a week since i bought her and then she got ill.

i am thinking of putting something like an oyster in that she cant miss but i will see how she is on friday.

she does not look overly thin yet.

Thats good. Is it one eye or both eyes ?

both but 1 is almost back to normal.

that is why the melafix it must be bacterial.

Melifix worked for me too but some people here dont believe in it.

Anyway, I'm glad its clearing up but you want to make sure your water quality is good as this is usually the main cause of cloudy eye in BOTH eyes.

my water tests all check out spot on i have been reading this.

zeros across the board ph temp spot etc spot on.

i am going to do some large water changes anyway once the medication is finnished.

I wouldnt get too drastic on water changes. After you are done medication, and the popeye is gone, 20 % a week for a few weeks should be fine. :)

Some time large water changes cause more harm than good. They should only be used in extreme emergencies. :)

yeah i was thinking about 20% changes how did you get the melafix out of your system at the end of the treatment i have my skimmer of at the minute as i know it will send it nuts.

i will do water changes obviously and i have a cannister filter i was going to run and use filter wool and change this every couple of days.

ps she ate a little today and seems to be better again although she has some reddness still around the eye.

When your done medicating, just turn your skimmer back on. It'll take it out. That and the water changes you should be good to go. :)
