Fishdoc's 120 gallon thread

Thanks Richard:)

Problem with that is I don't have a table saw. I wish I did. I would be making my sump with it also. I allmost broke down and bought one but I didn't think it was worth it for just this project.

I did this today with a skill saw.........very carefully:)

And I used a jig saw to cut the hole.

Still have to trim out the top and cut the doors in. After that I'll be ready to fill holes, sand, make doors and paint and stain.

thanks, Chris

Wow! Lots of progress since I saw it earlier today. Are you going to have the wood trim on the canopy come down and cover the black tank trim?

Thanks:) Yes the hood is going to have 1 x 4 trim around the top and bottom just like the stand.

Thanks Ckreef.

..........and um.....no:)

Chris

Wow, that is impressive that you built that with no table saw. What about a mitre saw, or router/router table? The main 3 tools I use in my shop are the table saw, mitre, and router. You can build just about anything with those three, but you are right...probably not worth it for just one project.
I hope to get some work done on my 120 this weekend.
Looking good!

Looks real nice Chris:) How does your canopy open?
Im in the same boat...only a skil-saw here also, but it can be done;) I really want to get a good router for my next tool.

Thanks guys:)

All I have at the moment is the skill saw, a cordless drill, a couple of jigsaws and a couple of sanders(and tons of hand tools) that help me with this project. My compound mitre saw got stolen several years back:(

It's really not that hard with the skill saw you just need a straight edge, a couple of clamps, a square and a good tape measure.....oh and a lot of time to reset everything for every cut:rolleyes: It also doesn't hurt that I made my living as a carpenter for 8 or 9 years although I was a commercial carpenter and didn't mess with real wood all that much:lol:
Those tools are definately future purchases but just not right now.

I am going to cut 2 doors in the front of the hood and they will swing outwards. I have a top hinged hood now and I wanted something I didn't have to prop open with a stick or my head.

Good luck getting some more work done on those tanks this weekend guys:)

Chris I got a chain saw you can use. :hammer:

Now were talkin' precision:lol:

Let me round up a few hairs to split.

Thanks Rick. I just might take you up on that:)

That head-prop for the canopy door is something I'm avoiding on my next canopy, too :lmao:

Everyone's so impressed until you open the canopy, prop it up with your head, and reach in the tank ....

Thanks for looking Mark:)
I picked that feature up from looking at the bowfront hoods at the LFS. I asked one of the guys that builds a bunch of stuff there what he would do and he said "this" and I said "well duh, that's pretty simple":)

Lookin good. I didn't realize you were so close to putting it all together. I know what you mean baout the right equipment. The best canopy I built was done with a hacksaw... Never built a stand, though... Keep us posted. Are you planning on moving everything into it before the move to East Tn, or are you gonna move it into the 120 in the move?

it's beautiful Chris. You will have something you can be so proud of and pass down for a long time! I can't wait to see it finished.

Thanks Gary and Suna:)

I am going to set this one up in Knoxville. Assuming we move to Knoxville of course, if not not sure what I will do. It will be much easier to have a tank allready running in Ktown to move rock and fish first and then corals into. It's all part of a grand plan:rolleyes:
I just hope the plan works:lol:

Chris

Well the move is in a few days and it's crunch time. I've gotten quite a bit of work done on the stand, canopy and equipment cabinet:
