Fishdoc's 120 gallon thread

Chris,
Glad to here your moved and things went well. I know that must have been a ton of work, moving is a real pain. Take a deep breath, drink a tall one ~you deserve it.
See you in Chattanooga at the swap. Good luck with your classes

Sorry about your losses also. I know your happy its over though:D Glad everything else made it....Its also very good you were able to find the help you needed:)
Drink a tall one like John suggested and try to rest before school starts....it will be much needed before too long;)

Chris, well sounds like you made it.:D Sorry about the loss of the fish:( If there is ever anything I can do for you please let me know. Look forward to seeing the new setup.;)

That really bites about your fish.

I have moved fish several times over long hauls like that and never lost one. I used to pack up my tank and haul it back and forth between memphis and nashville while I was in college. Of course it wasn't a reef tank but I was moving angels and other "delicate" fish.

glad you got moved sorry about the fish. Get that 120 set up and make us proud!

Well this one has dropped way to far down the list. Chris any pictures of your tank with all the goodies inside?
:D

I've been working on it John:)

I'll get some pics up in a few days. I finally have all the pumps and the chiller set up in the garage...just got the MR3 all hooked up yesterday(I've been using a little Euroreef for the time being). Still have to get the AC III, osmolator and the litermeter all hooked up and then I will be done. Well that and a little more ric and zoa mounting:p

those dogs are good watch dogs for anyone thinking they're going to steal doc's stuff before he leaves...maybe I know from experience or maybe I don't! :)

Yea, when I picked up that zoa rock awhile back. He said they was big babies but I wasn't sure if I wanted to get out of my car or not...lol

Well here are a few pics.

thanks, Chris

Ooo stinky DSB! Looks awsome! I love the color on the finish. I like natural and Cory likes dark. We see who won on my new stand! Your rock works look great also and what a huge clam, he looks bigger than ever!

I have a question about your acros. Do you glue them to stay in place or what? If so, what type of glue do you use? I have about 5 small zoa rocks I want to glue onto some rocks in my tank, but I dont wanna take the rocks out, didnt know if theres a glue i can apply to the zoa rock then stick it to where I want under water?

Steve

Chris,

How much flow do you get through your remote DSB? Looks like it has some lumps forming:D. Tank looks great. Did all of your corals make it?

Try some Great Stuff on your holes. It'll fill everything in and can be cut back out if needed.

Steve- super glue gel. You can get it most places. I typically go to Lowes and pick up 2 packs for $2, but others have found it cheaper (Dollar General, I think). Put a liberal amount on the bottom of the small rock and then hold in place in the water. It may take a minute or so for it to stick, but keep holding. If you can figure out how the small rock fits into the larger rock before gluing, you may have an easier time. For large corals, don't be afraid to use 1/2 tube on one rock (large like Chris' colonies). I buy 20 tubes at a time, so expect to need more than just a dab. A little dab won't do ya;). For gluing small zoa rocks, you usually don't need too much, though.

Thanks for the compliments Angela and Gary:D

All of the corals made it so far!

Good idea about the great stuff. I'll probably use that on the garage side and caulk on the room side.

As Gary stated super glue gel is the way to go IMO. The best I have found is Duro brand at Wal Mart. You get 0.11 ounce instead of 0.07 ounce per tube and I really like it's consistency.

As far as the remote DSB I am still experimenting with flow. It is sort of a cryptic zone as well and for now I am depending on plastic/air/acrylic osmosis for the desired result...this must be an aneorobic process which is hard to perfect when the waste must travel through the actual air;)

thanks, Chris

fwiw i never ever have luck with superglue. it always skimmes over and never sticks no matter how muck twisting and holding i do. i always use aqumend 2 part epoxy from home depo. takes a little longer to set up but works better for me. i use super glue gel for mounting tiny fraggs outside water though, like a digi branch or zoas then put it back in water, just no luck trying to get it to stick underwater for me.

Tht's interesting. I have a harder time with the AquaMend. On larger items (liike acro colonies), I might use some Aquamend to form a base (press to base of colony and press into rock to mold to the rock and coral. Large acro colonies don't hold well this way, so I then glue the formed Aquamend to the base of the coral, then put glue on the bottom of the AquaMend and hold in place on the LR... I guess different strokes...

What kinds of gel have you tried Angela? Some don't work very well underwater and like you said skim over quickly to the point it's hard to get them to "take" to the rock. What I have heard is the best method is like Gary said....superglue then epoxy then superglue again. I just don't like epoxy because it makes your skimmer go crazy for a couple of days.

FWIW, Chris

I buy the 2 for $1.79 pack at home depo but honestly couldn't swear what type I used and kept failling at for underwater glueing. I quit trying a long time ago after wasting tons of glue. Funny, I noticed you slapped some gel on that ORA green sera..thing and stuck it right back to the rock when it broke off that night I was over. I wondered why my attempts never work so smooth. I figured you are a seasoned pro fragger and I am but a ameture! But it may just be my glue after all. I would love to not have to mix 2 parts and then stand there with my arm wet forever waiting for epoxy to set hard enouph to hold something bigger.
