Well I finally got a little time to work on the next upgrade today and managed to get the stand framed out. I overbuilt it like I do everything mainly because mild earthquakes are a possiblility in East TN. I also framed the bottom to hold a 40 breeder sump. Ya think this will hold 1400 lbs?

I'm trying to analyze quake impact in my mind. The way I envision it, in addition to a sturdy support structure (stand) it seems some sort of shock absorption would be important between the tank and stand that has a bit of "give" to it like a layer of felt lining or something along those lines....yes, no, maybe?
 
I'm not looking forward to moving it :lol:


I just built it a little more sturdy for maybe a small tremor or something. If "the big one" hits I would think everyone will be SOL and have water and fish all over the floor. I also never liked the way the stock stands I have look stability wise. Especially with little kids that like to climb all over everything. Add to that a touch of paranoia = overbuilt stand:)
 
Looks good so far. Make sure to keep us posted on the progress. Are you going to get fancy with the finish of the stand or just keep it simple?

I am going to cover it with 1/4" sanded plywood and trim it out with pine. I am making the top out of pine 1 x 12's and it will be trimmed out also. Nothing too fancy but the wife wanted it stained so I decided to go that route. Still haven't figured out exactly how I am going to make the doors since I don't have a router or a mitre saw(at least not a powered one) but I have a couple of ideas.

on the back side it looks like you have only 1 2x4 for load bearing support. The 2nd one isn't really helping much. I'd wedge some more 2x4's under that bottom 2x4 on the back to help out with load. or at least rip a 2x4 and put half on each side under it.

It will probably hold regardless... but that one on the bottom isn't doing much.
 
Yeah I just kind of added that. I can't put a post(or two) to hold it up because of how the sump will fit and I couldn't double it up because of the overflows. I just kind of screwed that under the other one to help prevent any bowing(which it's not going to do because I added the center support). It actually has 5 3" screws attaching it to the 2x4 on top of it and a couple of 3' screws holding it to the sides so it will provide some support to the 2x4 over it that way.

Edit: Now that you mentioned it I have about 1" on either side so I will try and add a 1" piece on either side......Didn't think about ripping and making my own piece:rolleyes:

Looks nice but don't do pine. It's way too soft. It dents if I just look at it hard. Use something like birch.
 
are you going to convert the tank in your living room to something bigger? I know you were wanting more room. Keep the pics progress coming it will help me for when I upgrade size.
 
I've allready decided on pine Dave(maybe I should have started a pre 120 thread and asked questions:lol: ). I was going to do oak but the place I was going to get corner moulding from quit carrying it and I was going to have to make a long trip to get it so I decided against it. Thought about poplar but the trim was also too hard to get. My existing hood and two stands I have are pine and they have done fine. If the stand and hood get's all "denty" I'll just do something else next time:)
Actually the next tank will be much larger and I won't be on a time limit like I am this one. That's going to be about 5 years from now;)

Yes nashvegas the 90 is going in the 120. I will hopefully be able to trim down the amount of corals though.

I hear ya on the stock stands, the one I got used I was suprised it even held a tank/sump. It was 1/4" plywood with one 1x2 center brace underneath it on top and the bottom. Now, Its a brick S@@@house:D
Living over here now, I also worry about the quake thing, but theres not much I can do if the big one hits. Anyone feel the small tremor we had in west Nashville a few years ago? It woke me up, but my wife didnt. My neighbors felt it though. Keep the pictures coming:)

I can already see the buying frenzy at Chris' house when that happens!

The cops will be on surveillance down the street trying to figure what in these little baggies that people are so happily carrying out to their cars!

No wood glue yet. I used up the rest of my large box of 3" framing screws though:)

You can make doors with just a table saw...I do. I take 1X2 trim pieces cut to frame the door...then rip a groove into the 1X2 for the 1/4" plywood to slide into. Glue it...clamp it, and a couple of brad nails to keep it together while the glue dries. Instant doors.
This is what mine look like when they are finished.

The doors measure 19" wide X 24" tall. I have no problems with warping or bowing.
