I've seen a lot of opinions out there so I'm going to throw up a poll. What do we think of adding a flame angelfish to a 50 gallon - 3ft x 15in x 21in?

If you have a 50 gallon tank I can assume that there will be a lot of different fish and corals in there and flame angelfish can be not compatible with many fish and corals. I would say don't get one.

Most dwarf angles need at least a 30 gallon according to quite a few websites, but the flame angels needs more IMO... And they are harder to care for... The easiest being the Coral Beauty, and the hardest being the Lemon Peel but all are just as stunning IMHO!!! I will note though that, they like other angels, are prone to nip corals... It is hit or miss on any angel if they will do this, but this something you need to keep in mind if you want to keep corals...
I did not vote because I would not put a flame in under a 100 gallon tank..

Thanks for the replies so far. For clarification on my particular situation, I have 2 clowns, a melanurus, and a mcoscker flasher in my 50. I only have a few coral at this point including a frogspawn, ricordea, and zoa

Why do you think flames need a larger tank than other dwarf?

When you see a minimum size tank for a fish, please take the advice. Usually when a fish is put into a small tank below what they should be theirs a chance they will become aggressive to tankmates as they feel food and space is limited so they will try and kill off the other fish. A 50 gallon tank is way too small for a Flame Angel. You probably could do a Cherub Angel.

I agree my problem in this particular case is blue zoo says 30, live aquaria use to to say 40, and now LA says 70. Not to mention everyone seems to be divided into two camps about 50/50: 30g min and 75-100 min

LA is pretty accurate. LA use to say 40 because after more and more hobbyist was having trouble with them in those size tanks, so now they up the size which is more accurate.

I think the smaller the tank the higher the risk of aggression and stress as a result. From what I've read I don't think the tank size alone has a detrimental effect on the angels health, i.e. If it were the only fish it would not do any better in a 100 vs a 50. Territory formation and aggression are the main problems. It's only a 4" fish. But I'm the one who started the thread to find out similar info so I'm sure someone who knows more has a better answer.

i have a flame angel and coral beauty in a 65. they dont bother my corals or each other. i wouldnt have gotten the coral beauty if i didnt already have my upgraded size tank. i think gallon wise you have enough. idk about your dimensions to give it swim space. mine is happy in my 3 ft tank. active and roughly 3 inches.

I just got the 4" from live aquaria. The one I'm thinking of getting is probably 2.5"

So you started a thread asking about a fish that you already had?

As stated 4" are rarely seen, are you sure it's that big? Are you including the tail fin in that measurement ?

I said "fish I'm thinking of getting". I'm pretty sure that means I don't have it. I didnt say the fish I'm thinking of getting is 4 inches. I was stating that live aquaria lists them as reaching 4 inches. The one I'm thinking of getting is about 2.5
