Flame angel in reef tank?

Reefing scene since 4/16
I am thinking of putting a flame angel in my reef tank and was wondering if anybody had any experience with this? I know there is a chance it might eventually nip at corals. I have heard the success rate it about 80 percent but would like to hear some more opinions too.

With any angel, it's a hit or miss situation. They could be good citizens for the whole time or they can start nipping right away, or they could be good, as they grow they can start nipping. I have lawnmower blenny and a tang that's start nipping.

I think its a crap shoot. I kept a mixed reef, and tried different dwarf angels on a number of occasions. I never had one that didn't develop a taste for something in my tank.

I don't know how anyone could give an accurate 'percent of success rate'...but in the past 43 yrs (~30 with reefs), I've always had at least 1 flame angel in my tanks...I consider them a 'must have' fish

I think the person who said 80 percent was probably just 'guessing' but thank you that's awesome to hear! My LFS has some coming in and I think I will probably pick one up!

I'm taking my chances with one. Will have one arriving this Thursday along with a yellow tang. I've heard of you get a small or medium one your chances of it not bother corals is better than if you get a bigger one. I guess I will see. Either way I will keep it. I will just have to plan my corals around what or if it gets a taste for something. Hopefully it gets a taste for my aiptaisia! haha!

Flames and coral beauties are much more likely to do well with corals. I'd go for it. FWIW, I've kept flames without issues.

I agree, it's one of those fish that is often safe, but everyone has varying experiences with. I've had mine for about 3 years and he hasn't touched anything. Great fish.

Tbh nipping isn't always down to luck. I've seen plenty of people report nipping from angels and it can be traced to them under feeding due to higher than wanted phosphate levels. I'm not saying this is always the case but whenever I have seen fat and happy fish in a system, nipping has been less likely.
angels also constantly pick at the Rock work and some of this may be misconstrued as eating corals. Obviously sometimes they take chunks out of them but then you just need to be more careful what you add. I had a bicolor which isn't the best angel for a reef, probably the worst actually, and it only ever picked at favias. So I got rid of the favias. Some fish are worth it.

I'm another that wouldn't even bother with a tank if I couldn't have my Flame in it :) I'll take the risk. So far I've been lucky through the years. Besides the above about them being well fed I've also read that being sure they are used to other foods first increases the odds of success. I have NO idea if there is any real merit in that, other than the Flame has always been one of my first additions and before I started adding frags, so "maybe" that helped. Love those Flames though!!! I'd go FOWLR I think before I'd give up having one. My wife might nix that idea, but.....

Good luck and I hope you get a model citizen :) I'm JUST starting planning for a new tank myself and hope my luck continues!

Mine went right after clams, buttons & zoas. I had to remove them to save them from the Flame. My Flame nips at LPS and SPS but no real damage with those. I miss the zoas and buttons in my reef, but that's the trade off with Angels.

I had a flame almost take out my RR Purple dragon eye colony. Thankfully I caught it and traded it with my LFS for another set of Flames and this pair of flames nip at my SPS but do no damage.
