Flame Hawk owners corner

Don't be tempted to shorten your QT period and parole him early. A full four weeks is always a good idea. He's a great looking fish.

Flamehawks are on sale right now at Live Aquaria.

Definitely one of my favorite fish. I've had one for about 9 months and he's never tried to take on my cleaner shrimp. I keep him fed and happy and he never has to go hunting.

:)

One of my local fish stores claims that flame hawks have been coming in loaded with flukes lately. That might well explain the yawning and fin flaring. I would continue the prazipro treatment.

:p hehe my pair of flame hawk ... but they just eaten my pair of blue neon goby after the 2nd day in my tank ...

I have two geometric pygmy hawks. They are great fish will not eat ornamental shrimp. They are really secretive at first and will hide but they are just now starting to come out all the time. They were added 6 months ago. They are really part of the anthias family so not true hawkfish.

yeah, wondering what you other guys have for flame hawk tank mates,

I've got a pair of onyx true percs, diamond goby, green mandarin, and a 1 inch hippo tang that will be my flames tank mates as soon as it comes out of QT.

It's funny how a flame hawk can look so innocent while every day that passes, there are less and less ornamental shrimp in the tank.

I had a shoal of four peppermint shrimp in my tank for about two years. I introduced the flame hawk (who was smaller than the shrimp) and after a few weeks, I realized that the peppermint shrimp had disappeared. A few months later, I did find that one peppermint shrimp survived (he only comes up late at night).

Now I only have to teach my flame hawk to eat aiptasia ... then he would be the perfect perching fish.

I added a flame to my 20, and he immediately ate all 3 pep shrimp. No big deal, but I wouldn't risk adding a cleaner or fire shrimp with him. Like everyone has said, they are a great fish with a personality matched by few others. Mine loves mysis, prime reef, krill, and spectrum pellets. A varied diet will keep a flame's color the way it should look.

so far mine prefers spectrum pellets and live brine, also have cyclopeez, prime reef, formula one, frozen mysis, and frozen brine as well to supplement his diet, gonna go get him some krill next time..

Can be territorial with new additions

Can be territorial with new additions

I tried adding a 3 peppermint shrimp several months after the hawk was introduced. The next day one was in the sump one was missing and one was on the floor! I guess suicide was preferable to being eaten. I aslo added a small cherum pygmy angel (C. argi) shortly after. The hawk attacked the angel incessantly and the angel developed bad superinfection/fin rot within a few days- extending about a third of the way up the body. I added another group of peppermints and by the time they were eaten the angel had recovered and the two don't mind eachother now.

well, the flame hawk has been in my main tank for a bit over 2 weeks now, hasn't bothered any of the 3 shrimp, nor any of the 20+ members of cleanup crew :)

will post some new pics soon

how large is your flame hawk? I have 20+ hermits, hasn't bothered a single one.. yet.. and hopefully never :)

My flame hawk hasn't really attacked anything, though my cleaner shrimp would only come out at night once I added the hawk to the tank. Definately a great fish to have.
