Flame hawkfish - pellets

From what I understand they can live off pellets but it's definitely not their preference of food compared to something like brine - naturally they like to hunt so live brine really gets them moving!

Always is a good idea to mix up the food for any fish (even if live brine is just a treat)

New Life Spectrum would be a good choice. That can be use as your primary food, but I recommend supplementing with some frozen food like Mysis and Krill and sometimes even fresh seafood

My flame hawk has thrived on primarily flakes and pellets for 16 years. In fact after a long period of only dried foods, my tank inhabitants were kind of confused at first by frozen. I felt like they wer complaining - hey! Where are our flakes?

I do agree that variety is good and they are currently getting a lot more frozen. But you can't put frozen in an automatic feeder, which is a must for me when I go on vacation, so everyone learns to eat pellets. Plus pellets/flakes are a pre-mixed variety of foods and nutrients in a consolidated form. I think of it like kibble for dogs and cats.

I will be using New Life Spectrum. The primary reason for pellets is it will be an office tank, which means I will likely use an auto-feeder or have co-workers feed the fish when I'm on business trips or vacation. It's much easier to drop in a few pellets that thaw out the mysis. Also, some of the frozen stuff gets a pretty stinky, not the best for an office setting.

I have two friends who have kept reef tanks for 15+ years on only pellets and flakes. I will likely mix it up from time to time, but pellets will be their main food source. I've always liked flame hawks, and just wanted to see if they could do well this pellets. Thanks!
