make the LFS give you a styrofoam to put it in for the trip back;)

ASK them? :)

I checked it out at the LFS again and they will give me a
styrofoam box, also the RBTA was fully extended to about 10".
Tomorrow afternoon I will buy it right before I head back home.

Wow Phil,
Just got done browsing this thread and that BTA is absolutely gorgeous!! It puts my RBTA to shame, but I'm still happy with mine considering it's the first anemone I've ever had...
A quick question for you, I've been reading a lot in this particular forum and I've noticed a lot of you experienced anemone keepers prefer silversides for their anemones. The lady I got it from (her RBTA produces so many splits she sells them to the LFS's) said she feeds hers thawed out Prime Reef cubes. I've been feeding mine Prime Reef and it seems to love it. What do you think?? Should I switch or leave well enough alone??
Keep posting pics of yours, I can't wait to see more!!!

I use silverside or shrimp to suppliment their everyday diet of Formula 1, mysis and cyclop-eeze.
The chances of a BTA catching a fish in the wild is pretty slim. Their sting just isn't strong enough to catch even a small fish.
In an aquarium silversides are a easy source of protein and calcium for the anemone.

Based on all of the pictures, is this the infamous OBTA (O=Orange) that pop up from time to time or a totally different color morph that has not been seen before? I am curious to know how many of these are actually out there.
I recently acquired one of the so called OBTA's (I will post a pic once it starts opening up) but this is the first time I have seen this in my area as most of them never make it to the east coast. Does anyone else besides Shutiny and Phender have pics of OBTA's so we can compare? Are there general characteristics that differentiate OBTA's from RBTA's besides orange colored tentacles i.e. different base color, etc.

Ive never seen obtas in a local lfs here on the east coast. the obta i have isent near as orange as phenders, but quite a few of the one like mine were sold a few months ago thru various online sites.

I haven't seen any in any LFS here (Raleigh/Durham NC) either. I asked about them and was told they ship very poorly, so I suspect the ones that do survive shipping are nowhere near filling the demand on the west coast. None left for us east-coast people. :( Maybe some day...

Awwww, thank you. :) I need to build more propagation systems, like yesterday! And that's even before getting any new bta's.

Phender,
Just out of curiousity, how often are you feeding your anemones?

That is not really an easy question. Like I said, I feed my tanks everyday. Sometimes the tanks get Formula 1 or VHP cubes, sometimes they get mysis or cyclop-eeze. The anemones tend to catch a fair share of the food. I would guess that my big H. crispa might catch as much as half a cube three times a week (his tank is in a classroom at school and only gets fed 3 times a week). I don't target feed him at all.
The other anemones who are in tanks that get fed everyday usually get a target feeding of silverside once, sometimes twice a week. The silverside are usually skinny, 2-3" long and I tear them in half.
I try to place my anemones in an area where food drifts into them rather in a place where food just blows by.

I think I may be experiencing this myself. I got my OBTA right off of a shipment and it does not look very good. I have generally had good luck with getting anemones shipped in to me but this one is not doing so well. I have always hear that when their mouths "turn inside out" they are pretty much on their way out. Does anyone have any pics of this?

I don't know what infamous OBTA you are talking about. If you are talking about the one from Colorado, I can tell you the one I have is very different.
BTAs come in hundreds of color varieties. If you wanted to start naming them like zoos you probably could. Everyone wants to have something special and unique.
The first rose anemones were a rose color, sort of like this one from 1995: (the color in this pic is not great)

Now days it really doesn't make much sense to try to fit BTA colors and patterns into 3 or 4 classifications. Rose is an artificial term that is being used to try to describe BTAs in a large variety of colors. It really doesn't make much sense. They are all just BTAs with different pigments. There is no official distinction between a rose and an orange BTA or for that matter a rose and a brown BTA.

Thanks Phil....I was just curious as to where you stood on feeding frequency. I have friend that's kept an H.magnifica for 10 years and he is adamant about not target feeding his anemones...
