Flashing Scallop

Hi,

It's been a while since I posted something in the forums, not that I post a lot but I do have a quick question. I'm thinking about buying a flashing scallop at the LFS and I just want to know if anybody had any success on keeping them and what should I look for to make sure it's healthy before purchasing it? I've had my 55 up and running for about a little over a year now and is it to soon to have scallops? I know that they require a lot of filter feeding, and I have been feeding my tank DT's phytoplankton but any other information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

newbie here...tried flashing scallop in my 20 gal LFS said it should be fine, keep cal level up and constant is what they said. I was already adding phytoplanton. I have had flame scallops since beginning of one year old tank. However the flashing scallop lived three days, I did get to see it flashing. Third day found it with the crabs having a feast. I'm waiting to move 20 to 55 gal and try again, learning alot here. Good Luck, they are beautiful.

Thanks for the info. Too bad that they don't last that long. My LFS already sold it to somebody else. Oh well!!!! :( Maybe, I'll reconsider my pickings.

try a flame scollop, less $ and I think they do better. At least I have had good luck with them.

Try wrong. Less money, but they do MUCH worse.. They require a strict diet of different planktons etc.. and they starve to death in an aquarium..

Definelty not a good idea for a newbie..... Or any tank for that matter...

It may be beginners luck....but i have had two flame scollops for over 7 months in my 20 gal reef....I use phytoplankton once a week, reef solution (daily - small amount) and add brine shrimp for the goby and clown. The flashing scollop is the one that did not make it though. I had no other instructions from - you guessed it - "LFS" other than it should be ok. with what i was adding. I guess it's like some people can keep xenia and some cannot..still learning....maybe you would recommend xenia as easy for newbie...but that didn't work for me, they all, until recently (keeping one small section alive) died. I guess it depends on the makeup of your tank, chemicals added, feedings, waterchanges etc. Let me know if you find the answer to keeping flashing scollops.

WOW!!!! I kept Dendronephthya for over a year,,, then it died. Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢d say thatââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s good success right?

Scallops need so much food that most starve within months, up to a year at the most. Also, they only live a couple years naturally anyways and who knows how old the one you buy will be.

I decided not to get it b/c it seems that it is a very challenging invert to get, not that I mind the challenge but I would not like to stick my hand in the tank all the time. Thank you for all of your replys. :)
