Flatworm Exit Anyone?

Hello all. I just noticed that I have Acro Eating Flatworms on my corals. Do any of you happen to have some Salifert Flatworm Exit that you would be willing to part with? I need enough to perform an initial treatment on a 400 gallon tank and will replace what I use with a new bottle from Premium Aquatics when my order comes in.

It appears that the flatworms came from a frag that I received during the swap at Ocean's Floor, as those are the only corals I have recently added to the tank. The flatworms had to be in egg form as I treated all frags with TMPCC, which just killed the flatworms on the corals I pulled out of my tank.

hello
you say you have acro flatworms? do you have a pic of them ?i have heard of acro red bugs, not sure bout acro flatworms

I can try to get a picture. If you want to come by, I can show you a bunch of dead ones from my Tropic Marin Pro Coral Cure dip. I have about 50 flatworms in a glass from my treatments. I was impressed how fast the dip killed the flatworms. Now, I need to treat the corals in the tank that are permanently mounted.

PS I will bring a flatworm slide that I made with my daughter's microscope to the next RR meeting. :)

Hope they are not red bugs. Those little critters wiped out a bunch of my corals. Andy knows how to treat them and can be a big help to you if you have red bugs.

AEFW are not red bugs. Red Bugs can be treated with Interceptor, AEFW are not quite as easy to treat.

As far as I know, the FW exit will not kill the AEFW's. I believe the eggs have to be physically removed. I haven't been keeping up with the AEFW's for a few months now, so i'm not sure what has changed in getting rid of them.

My cat is the exotic dancer (my avatar). Paypal me a dollar and the black bar goes away for one song.

Fluke tabs will kill the AEFW, but not the eggs. I dont think that flat worm exit will do anything.

AEFW usually show up after we kill alll of our acro crabs with interceptor (red bug treatment). The crabs do a great job of keeping the AEFWs away. Also radiant wrasse, and ornate wrasses will munch on the AEFW.

Rod - I did a lot of reading last night on the AEFW, it seems some people had success at 2x recommended doses with FW exit on the larger AEFW like what I have. Have you ever had to deal with them and what did you use to kill them off? I have noticed that the TMPCC did an excelent job the AEFW off, but I really do not want to remove all of my corals from the tank.

BTW, the royal blue and pink milli I got from you is looking outstanding. It turned a really bright blue under the Reeflux 10k. At least he AEFW have not touched it! :)

I am sorry to hear about your brother, I hope all works out well for your family during this difficult time.

Bryan,

I did a lot of research as well and I was not able to find a 100% viable in-tank treatment. The recommended method is to set up a QT tank and pull them out for 4-5 weeks. It's truly a pain as I just finished my 5th treatment and placed them back in the main tank last night.

Sara,

Did you happen to see my WTB ad for a 65 gallon tank? :) Seriously, I need to get a quarantine tank set up quickly, are you aware of anyone with a 36x18 tank that I could buy?

I will try Flatworm Exit at 2x recommended dose tomorrow.

Bryan

Yes, I saw that and put two and two together. I'm sure you saw some the AEFW threads with my posts on it. I have mostly frags so I crammed all of mine into a 10 gallon and added a shelf as well. I cut eggcrate to fit the bottom and then made a shelf and twist-tied that to the bottom eggcrate. The shelf was only 1/2 as wide and long as the tank, but it definitely gave me more room to put my acro's ... double stacked. The eggcrate also gave the acros something to balance on so they did not fall onto each other.

I only have a 36x12x16 that you could borrow. It's something like a 39 gallons. Let me know if you are interested as we are heading out after work tomorrow to Northern WI and are passing through Rockford.

I also tried FWE at 1.5x dosage and nothing died ... pretty disappointing. Hopefully you will have better luck.

Here's the tank without corals:

Here's the tank with Acro's for the Red Bug treatment back in March. I moved the tank to the concrete floor for the AEFW's to take advantage of the cooling effects ... it helped.

Bryan, Call me if you get a chance tomarrow. I have a few options for you to barrow till all is good. I'll be home till about 11a, 815-713-3205 or work after 1pm 847-645-9337

Thanks for the offer Sara. Let me try to find a tank this tomorrow, I'll PM you later if I am unsucessful. I was able to find a non-RR tank for $50 at a place up in WI that is having a bankruptcy sale. :)

Have a good time up in WI and be careful with the Viper up I39/90. Lots of traffic and police on Fridays around here.

Hi Bryan, Sorry for the delay.

The flat worm exit is news to me, however, I quit researching when I found what worked for me. The fluke tabs killed the AEFW, then I added a Radiant wrasse, and an ornate wrasse. I did not treat the whole tank, Only the infested acros.

I have also heard very good things about the TMPCC.

I am glad that the mille is doing well for you.

I have a 50 breeder that I could loan out if youre still needing a tank

Rod -

Hmmm...I read about the fluke tabs in another thread last night. I believe my strategy is going to be control not eradication, as I do not think whole tank elimination is easily achievable. I bought a six line wrasse yesterday and plan on removing the three affected corals and doing every 5 day TMPCC dips. I am also going to purchase a second wrasse, a Yellow Coris. I really do not want to remove all of the corals from my tank, but I will if the control attempt does not work. Only three corals show any signs at all of being affected.

Do you think Fluke Tabs would work in a whole tank treatment?
