Florida Ric ?'s

Does anyone know what causes a Florida Ric to get bigger rather than put out babies? I have one that is about 5" in diameter when fully open and I would rather it stayed small and just put out babies.

What is the best way to frag a ric? I've read a lot and there seems to be differing opinions. Who has acutally done it succesfully? Do you have to have a piece of the mouth when you cut or can you cut it up like a shroom?

Thanks.

Some varieties are larger then others. Fragging rics is easy. Simply cut them into halves or quarters. The more mouth you get into the frags, the faster they will grow. Place the frags in a low flow area on some crushed coral until they attach to crushed coral and then you can glue them onto anything you want.

Here are a few pictures of a project I did last year.
These are the frags attaching to crushed coral:

You dont have to have a piece of the mouth but it increases surivability and recovery time greatly.

Hi Jeff,

Nice set up! How long does it take the quartered rics to grow into full size again?

It took mine around 3 weeks to go from a fresh cut frag to a round ricordea and another couple weeks to grow into a quarter size ricordea.

Wow, five inches!?!? I can't say I've seen any that big but mine are all under higher light and don't stretch too much. Good luck getting those babies. Maybe feeding will help some.

this is very interesting so for ricordias you can just cut them into two or four pieces even when you dont see another mouth??

Yes :)

Yes :). It's hard to kill them. Dont sweat it and remember, patience goes a long way in this hobby. Give them time to heal.

jeff,

how did you attach them to the plugs? glue? I have heard super glue works but is all super glue safe for reef tanks? also do you do it out of water like ive seen on you tube? how long do you let it dry before it goes back in the water> ?

thanks for the help on all the q's
