flourescent orange algae

i have a small patch of bright flourescent orange algae, just a tiny patch of it on one of my live rocks, is this a good or bad sign? my tank is about 6 weeks old, 55 gallons, with approx. 30 lbs of live rock, 60 lbs of live sand, a goby, a clown, a pseudeochromis.. any thoughts?

Thanks.

I guess new coraline growth and it will turn purple soon. I belive any kind of growth is good in a new tank especially if it is coralline growth. How long has your cycle been done??? I would suggest taking your time stocking a tank with so little live rock that just finished cycling. JMO

thanks

thanks

thanks you guys, i appreciate the help! Everything in the tank seems to be thriving, but yes, as I read more on my new found hobby, I feel it best to slow down, I will wait a couple weeks before I get more fish. I am also trying to stick to small fish, and will limit it to, what do you think 6 or 7? would that be a good number? the clown and pseudochromis are tiny. my dragon goby is the biggest thing in the tank and he is only slightly bigger than my largest snail! i don't want to stress them by having too many. i used to have a 180 gallon so this tank feels small in comparison and i only want little fish and not too many, someday when i can afford it, i will upgrade.

Thanks again,

Bright fluorescent orange algae is probably coralline= good sign.
Corallines occur in many colors.

ok so this rock was picked up while snorkeling in rocky point. The orange is almost all covered by purple now. It was almost completely orange a week ago tho lol.
anyways, its the stuff right above the hermit, obviously

haha cool :) Its actually too bad that the purple is taking over, cuz i actually liked it how it was. Imagine that one rock all orange, and then all the surrounding rocks purple like they are in the pic mostly. Looked pretty cool i thought. It had the phoenix suns colors :) (my fav. team lol)

i am out of town but when i get home i will take a picture and post it, it looks pretty sweet!

There is also a strain of "seaweed" I see from time to time on corals and live rock that is leafy and fluorescent orange. I have yet to see it every grow to any real size but I have seen it spread. It wouldnever be confused with coralline as it is soft and resembles a very orange version of sea lettuce in a way.

hmmm

hmmm

you are making me second guess my id now b/c when i look at that picture (above) again the small bit of orange in my tank are much brighter, flourescent.... but it is a very small patch at this point. I will have to have another look at it when i get home. it is the brightest color in my tank by far-- it is really spectacular!

so I just came back home and the flourescent algae was gone! My rock was just the dark maroon this morning and then I did a water change this after noon, about 5 of my 55 gallons and all of a sudden this orange appeared on the rock, but not the flourescent orange, this time there is much more, but it is a duller orange, like the one dude posted. Here is a picture of it:

If the flourescent stuff ever shows up again, I will be sure to snap a picture right away.

interesting

interesting

wow, fishfreak, do you know why it does that?

So I guess it could have floureced because I had lots of air bubbles from the water change...

it floureces after being exposed to freshwater or air for too long
Neither could have been possible in my case. My tank was several months old at the time with very stable parameters. I also have never removed the rock from my tank nor lowered the water level to the point where rock comes out of the water

also when it gets dipped in iodine (lol..had to dip a peice of rock in iodine to get rid of the algea....) i think it does it when it dies
