Flow for a baby erectus tank...

Hi everyone,

Well, my horses look like they are trying to mate, so I am working on putting together a tank to raise some baby erectus. I am trying to duplicate as best I can the set up seen here: http://www.seahorse.org/library/articles/scaleerectus.pdf
Ive been reading a lot and trying to get as educated as I can before they have babies. I have a 'sample' batch of baby brine shrimp I tried to decapsulate and grow in the usual DIY 2L bottle. (We'll see if they hatch, its been 15hrs.) I also have selcon to enrich when I can get em to hatch/grow.
As for the tank, I have a 20 tall, with a 10g sump tank. I'm about to drill the 20 for a 3/4" stand pipe. I also have a emperor 280 instead of the 400. My question is do I really need the adj. flow mini-jet 606, or will the regular maxi-jet 600 work fine as a return pump?

Thanks!

Oh man...no thoughts on the pump???
Well anyway I got some brine to hatch decapsulating them. That was what I was mainly worried about(how big a pain that was, how fast the eggs will fry, etc...). They didnt seem to hatch in the ratio I was thinking, but maybe I need better eggs. I just had the cheap LFS $5 vial. Clowns and mandarins enjoyed the snack though!

I think you really need to be able to adjust the flow IME.

I use Mag 2's in my setups, but I really value being able to turn up the flow to rid the food, and scale it way down for the other 23 hours and 45 minutes a day.

The valves are not so much and it will really make your life way easier IME.

What I do is used 20 or 30 gallon tanks with dividers in them. I put the horses on one side and all of the filtration on the other. I used HOB filters, protein skimmers and UVs on each tank. I break the tanks down once a week and sterilize them and the equipment. I put airlines in on the side the horses are on. There is no short cut in raising fry.. it's a lot of work, feeding, siphoning, water changes and cleaning... you need to make sure the tanks stay absolutely clean or the horses will get bacteria in them and get sick... I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but after years of raising the fry, I have discovered that cleaning is my best method of getting them to live....

Thats not bad news at all! I have been reading up on this as much as I can and have learned the same thing. Thats why I'm doing a sump on this one. This set up worked well for the people I got the idea from. The only thing they did different from you (from the article) is no protien skimmer and UV, due to frequent water changes via vaccuming up detritus and uneaten food. I am playing with a design of a DIY skimmer I can put in the sump also to help with keeping things clean.

Thanks for your input!

You should stop over & check out my set up since your only a few miles away. 1 pair of erectus had 101 fry last Fri., & another 1 had 295 yesterday.
