Flow for Nano Tank

Greetings - it has come time to get back into the sps game and I could use some flow wisdom!! I love tunze products - they have always worked great for me and I would like to use them on this new tank as well.

The tank is a nano of sorts ... 36"x24"x24" but the top section will have a 36"x6" area that will house the refugium, return pump, skimmer .... all in one style.

I would love to go with a nana wavebox mounted at one end of the tank for the display section ... 36" x 18" roughly, but, will this create enough flow or do i need to supplement it?? I will of course have the return pump as additional flow.

thanks.

You will need to supplement it, it isn't a matter of enough flow, but the type, wavebox flow is a non directional rocking motion, though the gph is very, very high. I would use it with a single 6105 set to 12V or max 2000gph.

roger -

thanks for the reply - how about a 6055?? i have used them in the past and i love the smaller size and the ease of the battery back up connection

The 6105 has the same back up possibilities and is the size of a softball about. With the 6055's it could work but you will need at least 2 and I fear that as the SPS grow in, they won't be quite enough.

good to know ... some more questions for you ... what is the foot print of the tunze 9005?? also, how do the circulation silence pumps compare to an eheim 1250 as far as noise/ heat generation, power consumption etc?? will that pump allow for a back up hookup? thanks.

The Silence pumps are pretty comparable, the 1250 is about equal to the 1073.020 and the 1260 is about equal to the 1073.040. They are full 120V 60Hz pumps, so no backup is possible. The 9005 is too small for an SPS tank of this volume, I would suggest the 9410.

what do the silence pumps offer vs. the eheim pumps?? is the difference mainly in the build quality and service?

whoa, i just looked at the power consumption ... the tunze pumps use much less power ... when adjusting the flow, does that change the power consumption?
