Flow improvements to my 55

I've been having issues with my tank, primarily I'm losing zooanthids, for a while and I have decided to make some changes

The countercurrent skimmer is getting the boot. It does a good job but I'm not here enough to maintain it properly. I found the problem with my ole sealife systems Venturi and I'm going to give it another try. It had a leak in the base that I didn't realize was there. I fixed the leak and I'll be installing it Thursday.

I finally got around to picking up the customflow return kit from Toyotaguy (Thanks Chris) and replaced my Mag5 return pump with a mag 7 I hope this solves my slow overflow problem

I turned my aquaclear 50 which used to be my primary circulation pump upsidedown and put it behind the rocks

I added a seio 820 (wow) and replaced the two aquaclear 30's with maxijet 1200's with hydor flo attachments

I quickly started a sand storm but I' made some adjustments and all seems peaceful. Here's to hoping I've solved some problems.

Hey Matt. At the advice of Joe Allard I added (2)Seios 820 to my tank and I have great flow as well. After this, I noticed the corals where much happier. -mike.

Matt when I get the right tools I'll pop off some of those zoos we got from you. Have a nice soild cluster of them, real fast growers unlike our damn blues

My mother colonies from those two colonies are still holding on, barely , but Ill let you know if they crash, thanks

Matt- my best zoanthid growth has been in minimal filtration (actually none beyond liverock/sand), lower flow in a 10 g tank. they might not be liking the high flow. Most of mine were great under moderate lighting as well. As is the current 20 g tank that my bangaiis are in- now that cyano is clear, all the softies are looking great. Know with the types they will need bi-weekly water changes minimally, but think that will suffice with little other intervention. Maybe it isn't the flow amount, but the direction?

did they turn white ? this could be the zoo desease. once it runs its course it ussually doesnt come back. do a search. anything near the infected (zoo's that is)will promote it to spread. once it has no where to spread it ussually dies off and polyps can grow back. the key is stopping the spreading. this limits its food and it dies off.

Has this helped much? Notice any changes yet in your zoas? What about your shrooms?

Was curious as to whether the new pump solved the problem you were having and/or whether it was too powerful for your overflow (wouldn't think so).


Yesterday, you seemed like you're ready to get the next project up and running....pick up some lights?!?

Well, here is what has happened

Shrooms are not happy I kind of expected this I'm still experimenting with direction

Montiporas perked right up

New return pump fixed the overflow problem

Sealing the hole in the old venturi skimmer worked and its collecting quite a bit of scum.

Zoos are improving. Michael, I didn't actually think the zoos needed more flow but I thought that the tank water quality was suffereing from loss of movement I figured it was worth a try

I did buy Pete's light fixture from his 125 for my future 180 (3x 250 Metal halide with VHO actinics) that project is under minimal progress until my house project is finished. Its moving foward so that makes me happy but if we don't close on the lot this week I am really going to lose my temper with this bank.
