Flow, Need some advice.

I have a 65 G, 36x24x18. With a 30G sump with about 15gallons in it. I have 1 mp40 and a mag7 at a return. I feel like I don't have enough flow. I was thinking about upgrading my return to a eheim 1262 to try and get more flow from my returns. Do you guys think this will give me more flow?

Can you turn the MP40 up? Seems like it would be enough for that size tank. Do you have it on the back or side? You could try one more mp40 and run them on the sides of the tank, opposite ends. Upgrading the return pump will increase turn over rate but Im not sure if it will give flow that you are looking for.

my set up is really close to yours

I also run a MP 40

are u sure the flow of the mp40 is not restricted by it getting dirty ?

I have ALOT of flow in my tank, about 100 lbs of live rock in display and the MP 40 still has good flow through the rocks !

I have it on the same side as the overflow box.

if you want to increase flow form sump, make sure ure overflow and plumbing can take it :)

The new koralias are like 30$. I have 2 in a 40B, they're kinda bulky though, you could get the maxis with sure flow mods

i wouldn't recommend increasing your return pump size, does very little for flow in your display compared to a mp40 or even a koralia, and an eheim 1262 isn't the cheapest pump out there, i would honestly go with another vortech if you feel there isn't enough flow, which surprises me 1 can't maintain in that size tank. As stated before going to an eheim 1262 will increase your turn over rate which tends to make your overflow louder, or maybe your overflow won't be able to handle it all together. I at one time tried to accomplish higher flow with a larger return pump also, quickly went back to the smaller return pump and was out the money that i could of just put towards a different powerhead.

i was planning to buy the 1262 used. Theres some flow on the opposite side of the mp40 but not much. i have the mp40 on the side of the tank. another reason i considered a return pump instead of another mp40 is because my over flow box is in the center. which kinda creates a somewhat dead zone on either side of the overflow box. i have two drains. both 1.5". one is for an emergency drain which will probably never be used hopefully. my sump is 30x16x16. I might just hold off on the return and get another powerhead per your guys suggestion.

your MP40 is NOT working correctl my friend, take it out and wash it.

in my 65G, when my MP40 is on full range on NTM, water splashes out of both sides !!!

I took it out and cleaned it the other day. Much better lol. Might still upgrade the return to help with the semi dead spot on either side of my overflow box
