Flow

I am currently setting up a 110 with 1-20 ga long and a 40 ga breeder sumps. It was recommended (by an online retailer) that I have at least 7 times the flow of my total gallons. Which would be 1170 gph. So they talked me into the Rio HF20. However, I ordered the HF20, paid for the HF20, but didn't recieve the HF20, I recieved the HF17. So, since i opened it in front of the delivery man, It wasn't what I ordered so I rejected the shipment. (If you want to know more about this nightmare you can PM me)

However, due to the nightmare that I was involved with, I no longer trust this company and decided to ask the "Flow"Question someplace else. So I am asking it here.

What skimmer do you plan to run on the system? There's really not any need to have the main pump flow much faster than the skimmer feed.

i.e. the skimmer is fed by a maxijet 1200 (300 gph). Then the main pump doesn't really need to be more than maybe 400 gph. Make sure to figure head loss on the main pump it may take something in the 7-800gph range to get that 400gph.

I just woke up so if that makes no sense I'll try again later. :D

I would also ask here first before any online retailer

also I have only heard the worst things about RIO pumps (even though I have 3 seios)

yea i have heard bad things as well...I run seios on my wc water sorage but wont run rio's on my tanks.
Just personal prefrance. I have seen viaAqua pumps which are in the same price range and work well. Just a little loud for my living room. Look into them.

The Skimmer is a ASM G3 with the original sedra pump that came on it.

sedra 5000 500gph (depending on some factors)

i suggest getting an ocean runner pump or eheim for return

either one the problems is that you are going to be running water through a 20G Long (to much water through the sump might not breakup microbubbles)

you dont want power heads in there tank?

all you need minimal is 3 times your volume run through the sump-- but there is more than one way to skin a cat

Was that for just the sump or the water flow in the main tank? Main tank need to be a lot more than that.

I have 6300 gallons per hour turn over in my 180 (35x turnover) the flow and I could still use more flow. I think the more flow the better, for many reason. And I don't have SPS Just Zoo's and Ric's

this will be for the sump, the "sumps" will consist of a 20 long and a 40 gal breeder, gravity fed, then having a pump to feed back into the tank.

On another note, I have 4 Koralias, 2-3's and 2-4's. I eventually want to have a closed loop system as well, but I cannot find anybody who will drill my 110 ga Perfecto Reef Ready Corner Flow tank.
