Flow ?

Hi,

I am setting up a 180 and (for now) only going shooting for a FOWLR. Is the flow requirement for a fish only tank the same as a reef? I only have the returns (about 800gph) and no additional flow. Should I add some power heads?

Thanks
Ed

Powerheads would be a good idea. Low flow can promote algae and cyanobacteria growth. Better flow is also needed for the gas exchange that puts oxygen in the water for your fish.

I have a 150gal and have around 1200gph from the returns, plus 2 more powerheads of around 800gph each, on each side of the tank. That makes a good flow to keep junk from collecting on the bottom but not so much flow to bother the fish. I think 10x is the minimum you want to shoot for.

Thanks for the Replies.

Do you think 2 of the Hydor Koralias 4 would be a good choice?
Is there a controller for the older ones that work? The reason I ask ... found some cheap ones on e-bay and was wondering during feeding how would one turn them off (would a timer work?).
