Fluval Edge 6 Gallon Build

REEFCENTRAL!!! It's been awhile! I've been out of the fish game for about 6 months, and my passion has returned once again.

I was looking through some nano builds online a few weeks ago and came across a few really stunning Fluval Edges. It's a unique type of aquarium design, and after seeing it i researched researched researched; found everything I could find on it.

Although the plastic is sort of cheap, the stock lights aren't great, and the lights create a spotlight affect, it's pretty dang sweet for $99. Due to the fact that the Fluval is seamless and enclosed completely, people complain about the inadequate size of the square hole in the top of the aquarium (6 in x 7 in i think?). I myself don't feel that it is so terribly small, and am pleased with it. Another complaint is the difficulty of cleaning. My answer to everyone who says that: GET A MAG-O-FLOAT; theres no way it'll be too difficult to clean. The coolest part about this tank is that it creates the "water cube" effect when it is filled to the brim, its pretty amazing looking.
Here's the list so far of supplies i'll be buying:

1) MR11 LED Bulbs (to replace the stock halogen lights)-found @ http://www.ledwholesalers.com/store/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=541
2) Marine Land Stealth Pro heater
3) 1 Hydor Koralia Nano Mini Pump
4)White Fiji Sand (Very Fine)

The Fluval comes with 3 filter media items: a foam block, a carbon sleeve, and a sleeve of those ceramic cylinders. Still deciding whether or not to take out the cylinders.
As far as a stock list goes, I'm nowhere near a completed one, but I know it will include mostly softies, and maybe a RBTA for an ocellaris. Any suggestions from the RC clan?
I bought the tank yesterday, and I will fill it once my sand comes in (hopefully this weekend)

Here's some pics::

it was well packaged and nothing was broken after opening.

The lights for this thing are TINY! You never really can compare them to anything online, so I put one on my iPod touch for reference.

Thanks everyone!!
Rob-just to the left of the filter's intake tube in the take is where the heater will be placed. what's nice is that the back portion of the tank which contains the light also allows for cords to be run through it to the bottom, so there wont be any cords. hopefully, once there is rock and coral and such in the tank the heater won't even be noticed.
I_Found_Nemo-why didn't you grab this beauty??

Question for all you reefers: which type of LED color should i buy?
White (5000K to 6500K) or Warm White (3100K to 3400K)

i haven't seen these in person, and am unsure on which would not only look cooler, but also be more beneficial to the corals.

nanotuners.com has one of the best led setups i have seen for the edge i was thinking about doing an edge when i seen the light. I have 7 of these led strips over my 28 none and i couldnt be happier.

I think White (5000-6500k) would be more benificial...

Johndoe-that LED set up looks pretty sweet, but its also pretty pricy for a nano imo.

iheartJMS-which color would be closer to blue?

Good Luck with the Fluval. I set mine up in Dec 2009 and had great success - with the exception of the lighting. I am on my 3rd light tower from Hagen, they cannot take the salt creep. The bulbs crust over rapidly, then the ballast/lights fail from the salt.

I now have a led cube light, pricy, but it should last. I placed it on the glass, not over the opening.

I talked to Hagen about the problem, they do not recommend the system for salt.

I've read various reviews relating to salt creep issues with new lights also. I plan to buy and cut a sheet of glass to cover the square opening in the back in order to eliminate evaporation even more and also prevent salt creep from affecting the lights. Good idea?

UPDATE; researched a bit more on the 5000k-6000k (WHITE) bulbs and decided to go ahead and order them. I most likely will purchase another LED strip of some sort, maybe a PowerBrite, to supplement these bulbs and also add some blue to the tank. Until then i may place my old 36" Current USA Compact light on the tank as a temporary supplement.

UPDATE: put sand into the tank and filled it!! i had saltwater already mixed so i've been ready. before i filled it i went and purchased a nice looking piece of live rock with some macro algae growth on it. also purchased some red macro algae (both types' names i'm unable to recall). Here's some pics:
Before it was filled:

Also picked up an electronic thermostat (this is right after the water was put thats why its so low, dont worry!):

I'm considering purchasing a Viper HQI Clamp-On Light 70 watt MH light and doing away with the Fluval's entire light system. Any thoughts?

hi i've set up my edge also. cycling for about a month now with some signs of brown stuff all over the place. that clamp on light looks nice, do you plan on keeping the stock hood?
im using mr16 bulbs and some blue led light strips currently and so far am having good success

That's red gracillaria. I have the same macroalgae in my Edge. And I know the green algae but the name of it is slipping my head at the moment. To combat the light problems. I completely removed the swing arm and bought a Coralife 9" Mini-Aqualight with one 9W actinic and one 9w 10k bulb. I placed over the opening of the tank length-wise and turning the hood 90 degrees so the long edge of the hood goes side to side instead of front to back. I had to cut the back panel of the hood off and used this piece to cover the filter area. This set-up allows more light across the tank from side to side and helps to alleviate the spot-lighting effect of just the center of the tank. I put a fan on the back for heating issues but haven't had to use it yet, probably will when summer rolls around. I took out the biocylinder bag and added a bag of phosban to help with filtration. Kept the sponge and filter. I clean everything out once per week. And so about a 50% water change each week. My goal someday is to put a sump in the stand below the tank and have an overflow built for the tank, and to replace the coralife fixture with the nano led light set-up from nanotuners. But my money is currently going to upgrade my larger system. Then I'll upgrade the lighting on my nanocube, and then I'll concentrate more on this system.

Hope this gives you some useful ideas.
